Hi all, can any one recommend a place to get some swaging done, one of my shrouds requires attention. Preferably in Perth, or better yet, Mandurah area?

Hi nate83, is the age of the standing rig is unknown ?
If that is the case , my suggestion is to replace the lot . Even if it is only one shroud that is the drama at the moment.

Hi SandS, im not too sure of the age of the rigging exactly, but it wouldnt be any older than 5 years. It all looks quite good. Its just that the "T" on the T-Ball swage has cracked, so was going to just replace that one, the others all look good. Cheers dude.
I am on the other side of the continent to you so can't give any advice on reliable repairers over your way sorry.
But having just been through the process of replacing my own standing rigging everything I learned or heard from the guy I had do mine and from the very helpful people on this site would suggest that if it is only 5 years old you should be right. General rule is that it should be good for 7-10 years. It's worth checking your insurance as there may be a clause relating to having it replaced at the 7 year mark. If it is not and the mast comes down you may not be covered.
I would certainly be giveing all the remaining pins etc a very close inspection.
Hi MatM14, that is a very good point mate, i will definitley be looking into that. The rest of the rigging "appears" ok, but it is hard to spot tell tales sometimes. Cheers for the very good advice.

Nate, Replace the lot. If one has cracked then why would you trust the others? Besides the shrouds should be exactly the same length within a millimetre. If you cut one swage off one shroud will be approx 50mm shorter than the other they are going to be too short if you cut both.
I'm doing the same at the moment.
Rig is off, and all stays will be replaced.
It seems a busy time at the moment, riggers are taking ages to get back with a price.

Frant, when you say replace the lot, you mean all the shrouds, on the whole shroud wire and swage fittings?

I worked there for 4 years and they are a great bunch of guys who support the local fleets and yacht clibs, from Peli's to Offshore.
If one is cracked have a very good look at the others.
Tell them Ben sent you and he said you can get T2 (trade price) :)
Looks like the consensus is that you should just bite the bullet and replace the lot Nathan. Easier for those of us that aren't handing over the cash to say.
When I did my rigging recently I found a rigger that was quite sympathetic to my pauper status and he was happy for me to do as much of the work myself as I could. He assisted me to pull the mast out, then was happy to leave me to remove the old rigging. He cut and swaged the new wires and would have been happy for me to put them back on the mast myself but time pressures meant I used his assistance for that also.
I guess what I am saying is, have a chat to your rigger. You may find that you can redeuce the price of the job down to the materials and the labour time it takes to press the new wires if you can handel the rest yourself.
Just went down to sail power and spoke with Grant, top dude, and he suggested that I at the very least do both shrouds, as it is a fractional rig the are the lower shrouds. Of course he mentioned if at all possible to do the lot that is ideal, but given that the rest of the rigging is fine, i will get by with just replacing the 2 lower shrouds.
