Hi there. I would like to compete in a local multi class regatta without the jib on my Nacra 5.0. Any hints on how you think it will go or on tacking w/o a jib? (Before you ask "why would you do that": 1) just laziness and 2) reduce power). Any hints?

I have sailed a 5.0 cat rigged a few times.
Tacking was an issue in lighter breezes and it made me learn how to reverse a cat out of irons really quickly.
The biggest issue I found was downwind angles and speed. You should normally "wild thing" a 5.0 downwind, but this is a lot more difficult with only one person sailing it and only having a main.
I am sure you will still have a lot of fun, but might get frustrated when normally slower boats pass you on the downwind legs.

Tacking might be abit harder at first, but once you master the roll tack and reversing the rudders you'll find it not to bad. As Jared mention your upwind and downwind angles will be different to sailing with a jib. Raking the mast back might help the hight lost.
Terrific fellas. I have memories of sailing H14 and forever stuck "in irons" but you seem to have confidence it can be done. I can reverse rudders quite competantly and can roll tack a mono but ???on a cat??? How do you do that? Mike
1.hard on the wind and mainsheet in tight
2.begin turn gently but apply steadily increasing pressure on the helm through the turn and move aft at the same time.
3.As the boat goes through head to wind release approximetly 2 feet of mainsheet (alittle more for cat rig) and recleat it.
4.After the hulls are pointing onto the new tack, move directly across, tranfer tiller and move forward toward the main beam, head -ing down onto a close reach and sheeting in at the same time.
5.Build speed for a moment on the close reach and head up to close hauled.
**Important points to remeber, make sure you move back to the corner of the boat to lift nose out of water while tacking (stops bows bogging down in the water and wind will push them around like a jib). Don't move across till the batterns have poped and move forward on the new tack to help get the back of the boat out of the water and accelerating.**
Tacking can be down with out reversing rudders if using trapeze, however still be prepared to reverse rudders in some curcumstances.
