So I haven't been out to my boat for 8 weeks or so and now I've got two little surprises snuggled up in a trough locker. I didn't have the heart to give them a swimming lesson, so how long before they fly away? Size wise they are similar to the adults but still have their fluffy feathers. They must be 5 - 6 weeks old I would think.

On a similar topic, I actually thought that the seagull nesting season was over as we are now into December. I thought it was more of a September thing. Does anyone know their actual nesting season? I'll implement stronger measures next season...

Nearly became an "uncle" to seagull chicks myself a week ago .mum had made a lovely nest right at the door of my boat and was not happy when I explained to her that it was MY boat, not hers!! Felt like a criminal throwing her off MY boat and she had PLENTY to say--Kept squawking at me from the nearby cruiser for a couple of hours. Her mate joined in too! (There were no eggs in the nest by the way --don't know what I would have done). Meanwhile on my Port side, a couple of gulls were busy in their nest too so someone else was in for a surprise !! My bird book was no help but did say that they breed in large colonies---Maybe it could have been WORSE!

If they are Sliver Gulls (Larus novaehollandiae) then they fledge for about a month and it's usually around week 6 that they become independent.
