I am currently considering a journey from queensland to thailand via png, I have plenty of boat experience but 0 sailing. so i am likely to join a sail club and begin. also have been looking at the seawind 24' catamaran... a few questions,.. would a year be enough time to prepare for such a journey (sailing experience wise), how long roughly would this take,. would this vessel be suitable seen as the longest stretch of water that would be undertaken is roughly 150km, any suggestions/thoughts on the topic would be greatly appreciated ..

A few questions in reply.
1/ At what age did your mother teach you to wipe your bum? your answer probably 2 or 3
2/ Do you still leave skid marks in your jocks? your answer if truthful probably yes
3/ If in nearly a lifetime you have still not mastered the simple art of wiping your bum what makes you think that you could master the art of sailing in anything less than a lifetime??

You could do it in a Seaward 24, but I wouldn't.
Can I suggest you start at step 1, go to your local sailing club and start sailing and also enrol in sailing courses. Then decide on your trip and type of boat, sailing realy isn't that simple, it does take some experience to master and there is a lot to know if you want to do it well.

You can master sailing, but if you wont a go and you will be ready soon.
Just cut corners. Get a good four stroke outboard and use sails when you feel gentle breeze.
Learn as you go. You have to consider the other issues too.
It would be more demanding in preparation.

Are pirates a problem in that area?

Keith, I'm in Phuket at the moment and last week was at Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and the feeling here at present is that it is probably more of a problem in New Guinea and Indonesia than the Malacca Straits or the Andaman Sea.

Bartender! Another large Singha please.

Shall I start to organise a mooring for you?

No need to, I will be home on Sunday arvo. Thanks anyway Graham.

BTW, I was up here for a wedding not to look at boats, although I did do some of that as well, mainly at RLYC. Nice bar there too may I add, only RM5 for a large Tiger.

I had heard that some waters/bays around PNG where not that saft.

As I said in my first post Keith, "The feeling here (RLYC) at present is that it is probably more of a problem in New Guinea and Indonesia than the Malacca Straits or the Andaman Sea."

So yes, not as safe as you might want it to be. The watchword is to be alert at all times as mostly it's petty pilfering but sometimes a lot worse, up to and including being killed.
