G'day, I'm thinking about a south coast Xmas cruise Port Hacking to Eden but maybe not that far. I have called into Jervis Bay & Eden before. The limiting factor is my boat draws 2.45m. Any ideas of other places I might be able to get into along that stretch of coast? I got a few ideas from Alan Lucas's book, but would appreciate some local knowledge.
Currawong has some public moorings for use and it was pretty well protected from swell when we were there- easy to get to town with a dinghy.
Right down the southern end of Jervis Bay has some moorings right up close to the beach - top spot.

Currawong has one mooring as far as I know and is exposed to NE winds. Perhaps your thinking of Callala Bay. I would not recommend Greenwell Point as a port for a vessel with that draft unless you moved about only at the top of high tides. Plenty of water here but there is just the odd shallow spot to catch you out.
Thanks for the info. Getting aroud Greeneell Point looks a bit like getting around my home port, Port Hacking You really need local knowledge to stay off the sand banks & high tide.

Hi Ramona,
It was definitely Currawong and we stayed for two nights - we had no issues with our draft at 2.1m
However it was May, so no Northerlies to speak of.
Durras offers a nice bay at the north end that is sheltered from NEers. It is shallow-ish but you should be able to tuck in there on a nice day.
In Batemans Bay, the Tollgate Islands offers a reasonable and beautiful anchorage on the NW side of the gap between the two islands, in about 4m of water where there is a clear patch of sand. There is a sea cave through the island you can take a dinghy through (with care!!) at the south end of the island and the Shark Gully on the NE tip and other spots offer nice snorkelling. If the seabreeze picks up and goes NNE it can get gusty in there, but I loved it.
There are several open-ocean day anchorages north of BB in the national park, and some lovely bays on the NE edge of Batemans. Lots of people just go to the mooring in Chain Bay, which is nice but has houses ashore - we prefer the three bays to the east. Around BB we always lay out a stern anchor to keep you stern-on to the swell, which does get in. The normal anchorages are in about 4m over sand.
I think the bar at Batemans is about 1m+ at low tide. We were getting a 2.1m boat across regularly a year ago. The bridge opens twice a day and you can probably get under the powerlines upstream (our 11m fractional rigger has no issues) if you want to do the pleasant run up the river. BB is not great in a southerly so if you get stuck there in a big blow, either the marina or the river could be good spots. BB is also a great place to re-provision, with supermarkets etc near Snapper Island (just outside the bar, complete with public mooring and good dinghy landing) and just near the public jetties in the river near the bridge.
Broulee, as mentioned, is good; surprisingly good in a NE in fact, and well sheltered from the south and west. Barings Beach to the north is sheltered from NE breezes although can be gusty.
Moruya River has a deep but narrow entrance and you may struggle to get past the launching ramp about 2km (?) upriver. A road runs alongside so although it can be lovely in the evening, it's not remote.
The marinas at Bermagui are nice, and cheap. There was a great restaurant upstairs in the marina but it may have changed hands. Narooma seems to be as bad as ever. We haven't anchored off Montague but the NW tip (I think) seems to have some shelter for a day stop.
Kiama is rolly and very tight, but interesting. Ulladulla is OK but you won't fit onto the floating jetty with your draft so will probably have to raft up.
Thanks again for all the info. I'm looking forward to sailing south & stopping along the way instead of just racing past.
Maybe you could get into Bermagui.
Also anchoring off Batemans Bay
And anchoring in behind Broulee.
We hit the bottom bringing a boat back from Tasy going into Bermagui three years ago.
Hello Hort,
I too are considering a cruise south at Xmas, my trip is just to Jervis Bay from PH to meet up for Xmas day with friends at Huskisson. So weather depending, plan on leaving Saturday prior to x-day then plan on heading back for NYE in the harbour. I draw 1.95 with a 37 Bavaria, the mooring at Currwong looks interesting, for South shelter
pretty compact though. I am hoping I can snag one outside Husky, are they ok for weather from the South?
cheers Richard
