Have just purchased a Southern Cross 23. Very Excited, Complete novice. Have a Heron, that's about the extent of my sailing apart from out on mate's vessels.
A few things to do and apart from the old Marine Shops, I am unaware where to go for parts, apart from the Whitworths.
The girls needs side railings from bow to stern. I would say 3 posts and wire to suit.
Any ideas where in Brissy to go, and cost?
Congratulations on new boat.
I am going through exactly the same exercise in purchasing Staunchions, bases ,cable, hooks, bolts ,backing plates sealant and on it goes for a Sonata 6 I have just purchased. I am also in Brisbane and after searching the internet gumtree, ebay etc. I believe Whitworths are about as cheap as you will get for new, especially allowing for postage, if you avoid the Ronstan product. See page 132 of their current catalogue .For the cable I am using rigging ss wire not the covered stuff.
I am going ahead in purchasing the appropriate gear but am in two minds if I can do the job properly
regarding properly sealing . There is heaps of info on installation and the pitfalls on various sites . A must read before you undertake. I was lucky to source 4 new staunchions at $60 discount but that's all.
I am only 12 month in Brizy, still discovering but my favourite place for Stainless stuff is
United fasteners 679 Boundary Rd, Richlands QLD 4077, if I need 2 screws I buy 10 , that's how cheap,
they are.
if I were you , I would use the stock whitworths bases and stanchions . then use high strength rope for the cable
Thanks so much for all the info and advice guys.
Really appreciated.
I do like Whitworths. Always have.
I also getting the Vic Sonta Association to send down their DVD for all things rigging etc.
Congrats on the new boat, I agree with S and S. I used stanchions from whitworths and they were fine but I replaced the wire I got from Whitworths because it started to fray and got rigger to supply better quality wire with attachments which worked well.

Hi Guys,
The "Port side" Backstay Tensioner/Adjuster has been lost in transit.
Whitworths and I did some research. No dice. There is a yacht engraved/stamped to unit (Riley?).
If any one has any idea where to purchase a new one, I would love to know. Or is it better just to replace the both of them?
Cheers
I have found out it is a Johnson Quick Release lever. Only seems to be available from the US. $$$$$$$
