Hi All, "Astrid" my S&S 34 pictured below needs a mast. She is the English built model with single spreader rig and I believe the mast should be 41ft long.
If anybody knows where I might get one I would much appreciate it.
Cisco, you've been quiet lately which I hope means you've been busy working on your new boat. How goes it? Found a mast yet?
Hi maxm, I have had a good week of work on Astrid, getting her out of the water, getting all the barneys off
check the pics, getting the rest of the gear off and tearing out the rotten and unnecessary ply panels.
During this clean out I happened to find an engraved brass plate from the CYCA acknowleging a yacht "Cicely June" had competed in the 1969 Sydney-Hobart.
I made an enquiry on the S&S 34 owner's forum and it turns out this yacht is "Cicely June", the very first S&S 34 in Australia. I could hardly believe it. I have bought and rescued a piece of Australian yachting history.

The mast situation is not so simple as there are several different rigs for these yachts so I think I will have to get a new mast.
A day's work in this lot.
Looks like you have a great project on your hands mate, hope you get the mast sorted and she starts looking her old self again...
Can't wait to see the finished product!
Michael
Looks like you're set to wipe out a whole civilisation of marine organism there! ![]()
That's a good project, cisco, and now one with a history to boot. She'll be a great boat once you're done. Keep us posted!
Yeah, well one of the guys suggested I should contact Marine Parks before I destroyed the marine biology research centre.![]()
I won't be able to do much to her for a couple of months as I have three other smaller projects to get out of the road first. One is a car to finish off and sell, one is to finish off the bathroom to avoid divorce
and the other is another boat to get back in the water.
I'll certainly keep you posted and with pics. Cheers Cisco.
Careful mate, Jessica may need some spares......
Pretty sad to see her have such a serious mishap on the first night of her shakedown....
Michael
Definitely not a good start to a potentially great adventure. Her mast and rig was brand new and I have just been offered her old mast, boom and attachments at a not too attractive price. She might need them.
Apart from that her mast is keel stepped while mine is deck stepped so the section may be too light for me.
One thing I will not do is compromise on the design specs for Cicely June for the sake of economy. She deserves better than that.![]()
why have you put an upside down photo of a lord of the rings model set on the forum and claimed it to be a ss34![]()
I have managed to scource a mast and boom. David Lambourne Yacht Rigging in Brisbane donated a new mast and rig to Jessica Watson for her round the world record attempt which you probably know was broken by the Chinese bulk coal carrier recently.
David has since built her another mast which should be going on "Pink Lady" in a day or two. David's comment about Jessica was that she is very special.
In the meantime he has had the original mast from the boat which he said would have gotten her around the world and has sold it to me at a reasonable price.
The original build of the mast is very high quality and with refitting and refurbishment will be more than adequate for Cicely June.
Photo of mast head fitting here and more shots in photo section. Cheers Cisco.
Top Find!!!!!
Best of luck with the re-rig wish I could help you sounds like and ideal project as I used to work at Zapspar in Sydney as the rig designer and factory supervisor.
Fair Winds Cisco
Cisco,
The yachts name is "Cicily June" Check-up on the Rolex Sydney Hobart Results of that year she came 3 days 12 hours 57 minutes to Hobart no slouching there, I took 5 days in a 42 foot Farr!
Your yacht is a beauty, my Folkboat was a sunken wreck when I bought it with my tax return!
Cheers
Anthony
C'mon Anthony, you can't float that one and not say more... We need a new thread! Any before and after shots?
Thanks Anthony, There is a huge amount to be done before I get to putting the mast up however when that time comes, if you feel like an all expences paid short holiday at beautiful Burnett Heads, I am sure it can be arranged.![]()
A great mate of mine here is a professional fibreglasser around the waterfront and I took him to have a look at the boat yesterday.
He is of the opinion that we should re do the repairs to the stbd side of the hull but apart from that the rest of the boat is sound and very strongly built.
Re the history of the yacht there is a very interesting article here http://www.hyperea.net/ss34/articles/1983-The%20story%20of%20the%20S&S%2034%20mould.htm that seems to indicate that Cicely June gave Ted Heath on Morning Cloud a real good run for his money in the 1969 Sydney Hobart Race.
Finding out this sort of info just makes me more passionate about the boat.![]()
Cheers Cisco![]()
