I have just discovered that the sail in one of my sailbags on the boat that is marked "Spinnaker" is actually a 140% genoa.
My current spinnaker pole is already a bit to short to pole my furling headsail out nicely so it will obviously be to short for a bigger headsail.
Does anyone know of a formula to calculate the correct length of the pole to a particular sail size.

Thats why my current pole is a bit short as there was a bowsprit added to my vessel about two years ago and so J has increased.
I don't think the headsail was recut or modified after the bowsprit was added so that will explain the pole being a bit shorter than needed.
The section of the current pole looks a bit light as well so it won't hurt to replace it.

I just went to Yachting and Boating World for a look see.
Recommendations are for a genoa pole to be J plus 15 to 25%
I think I will have the sail recut to suit and then add the new pole.
From a practical perspective rather than a rule the pole should be just short of the distance from mast attachment to the forestay deck attachment allowing it to be put out the other side with out detaching from the mast.
I will probably get howled down for this one.

What do you imagine I would be writing on the pole to make sure my spelling and punctuation are correct ?
i'm interested in this too. I remember reading someone on here uses a windsurfer mast as a genoa pole, I thought it was a good idea at the time and am thinking of doing the same. Anyone got any idea of what are the best ideas for the fittings on the ends of the mast?

Whisker pole not a spinnaker pole. I used an ordinary spinnaker end on the thin end and made my own for the thick end. You can use two windsurfer tops and join them so you have a taper both ends. The length I arrived at by trial and error. I attach mine to the mast using the jumper pole rings on each side of the mast fairly low down, about half way between the boom and the cabin top.

Like a hole in the head I bet. 
The lifestyle suits me but the money is not real flash. You have a lot of time to think about ways of not spending it.
I had to sail offshore to go fishing today. Not much wind but I used the whisker pole. The fittings are the old 50/60's style spinnaker pole ends, The one on the fat end I cut and welded extra straps. They are off an old spinaker pole I had for my Dutchman. Don't always use the topping lift, had to today because of the lack of wind.
