I've just bought a supersonic 27 1980 and I'm trying to find out information on these boats where they were built who built them or if anyone's sailed them before
I have never sailed one but been tempted to buy one over the years. Designed by Scott Kaufman as a quarter tonner and was one of the larger boats at 27 feet. I used to own a M&W 26 quarter tonner. There are plenty of them about. There is even a flush deck version somewhere down the South coast that used to visit here.
If you bought Midas Touch, I spoke to the previous owner recently, and he told me he spent a lot of money on her. Maybe that is why it has that name!
I owned one back in the late 80's. It was nice enough to sail, although the deck was very spongy (I would assume it probably had a balsa core which had started to lose its integrity. If that is right it should be a warning about drilling holes for any new fittings - there's a right way to do it). The were vulnerable to osmosis but I would assume most have been fixed by now. By modern standards the internal fitout was a bit ordinary.
The main hint I'd have relates to the 8hp Yanmar diesel mine was fitted with. Even after they are warm, if you increase revs too quickly they will spit black smoke from the exhaust and continue to do so. Throttle back down and increase the revs slowly and all seems to be well.
