Hi All,
Looks like I be moving to Melbourne in a couple of months....greatly enjoyed the city over last few months and real estate prices are still in the affordable bracket so taking the plunge etc..
So weather pending I would plan 1-2 weeks to do the trip and in need of crew and advice....I would cover any food and boat costs for anyone that has experience and wishes to jump onboard and chances are that I would have a car to drive back to Sydney.
As to advice I read a bit of info and it seems that you can hop 1-2 day sails hugging the coast with reasonable chances of decent sails if weather permits...I also read about the rip in PPB so is there anything else to look out for?
The yacht is Bounty 35, well proven coastal and offshore...
PM me. Depending on timing I might be interested. I would need it to be later, April maybe, rather than earlier.
Where abuts are you mooring or which marina? Holdfastom
What suburb are you setting into?
I'm in Botany bay but by that time likely to be Sydney harbour and not sure where to yet but most likely PPB somewhere...why is that?

Hi MorningBird, will do mate, April is quite possible also, I've no real time requirements but would want to do it in warmer/northelies rather than colder/sou westerlies :)
Sorry meant in port philip bay
Oh...no idea yet, I'm guessing that prices will be more reasonable than Sydney and either PPB or on the other side Quail island way but I've not researched at all...last time I sailed them areas was more than 20 years ago out of Cerberus (and that was a relatively short experience)...

Please forgive me if I misinterpret, but from your last couple of sentences, it appears you have done some reading but may not have sailed this route before. That's ok, but I would strongly suggest you invest in some more research so you are aware of the anchorages and "bolt-holes' along the potentially nasty Bass Strait coast, and also to learn a bit more about the weather patterns and tides. The Cruising Yacht Association of Victoris has just published an excellent book "Cruising Victoria" which gives you all of that. Google them.
As I said, apologies if I have underestimated your knowledge.
Cheers, Graeme
Hi Graeme, youre absolutely right, I don't have the local knowledge as not sailed that route before hence request for advice and assistance...I sailed plenty all over the pond (more in UK/Atlantic region than here tho) and crossed the strait a couple of times about 20 years ago but all that sums up to is that I hopefully can admit my limitations and would not pretend any knowledge of the area ))..thank you for the heads up on the book, Ill look it up and am actively researching the route so hopefully in time for March I will have prepped a good few options...
I did the Sydney to Melbourne trip and return early 2015 so send me a message an I will provide some info on the passage. I also have a passage plan if you want it. Passage is straight forward but recommend you have anchor and chain suitable as you will be anchoring in places. Entrance to Port Phillip heads is an experience in the wrong time and conditions but not as daunting as it is made out if you keep to the slack water. Once inside you need to make sure you select the appropriate channel for transit across the bay to where you are ending. If Morningbird is going back to sea I could be interested in joining you.
Watch out for the lobster pots in Bass straight, and also the damned Tasmanian ferries I'm convinced they seldom have anyone on watch that knows the boating rules![]()
