Can anyone tell me what a survey involves?
want to third party the boat, but been told i need a survey.
thanks.
The boat will need to come out of the water. Then you pay a boat surveyor to look over it and write a report for you, use that report to get insurance. If the report shows lots of defects then the boat may be uninsurable.
When I did mine over a year ago I payed $300 for the survey & probably about the same again for the lift and wash.
Surveyor looks at hull rigging nav lights stove safety equipment fire extinguishers
Wiring ,battery secure ,safety rails and lines .rudder and pivots or pintails
If the mast and sails are not insured as in third party these are not on the list

thanks guys. I guess ill wait til she next needs to come outta the water in about 7 months or so.
I have read on various there is a particular insurance company that will insure just about any boat sight unseen without a survey and their price is a fair bit less than other companies that require a survey
The problem is that if a accident occurs the owner has to pay for the repair and then the insurance company will decided if they will cover it and reimburse the owner and in quite a few cases I read about the would not pay
I think that this company is used a fair bit by owners of boats that other companies will not insure but who need insurance cover (or a bit of paper to say they are insured) to enter marina' s ect
Regards Don
If they accept a higher risk at a lower premium, they won't pay claims. With commissions, administration, reinsurance premiums, profit margins etc they would be broke if they did.
Would have been nice if they would have said that first phone call. Instead, it was 3 phone calls a few emails and then when I said to go ahead they said I need survey....
I think most companies now want a survey done on older boats even third party
Not sure what the age limit is

I think it is usually 20 years but as they are not insuring the vessel I fail to see the point of requiring a survey for 3rd part property insurance.
