I have a thornycroft BMC rated 50bhp with a newage hydraulic gearbox with solid engine mounting and direct drive 1"1/4 shaft with 2 blade prop. ( Thornycroft apparently where used in London taxis.)

Currently a 2GM20 Yanmar raw water cooled is fitted but I would love to go to a 3GM30 Yanmar with fresh water heat exchanger or a similar sized Kubota, say a D850.

30 year old Sole 20hp diesel. Great engine but the shaft is long and only supported at the stern bearing. A bit of vibration but can be lived with.

9.9 Yamaha 4stroke outboard, one of the best engines I ever had.
Guess a bit heavy for 23 footer.
Someone can see it as a overkill but came with the boat.

Repowered earlier in the year to a 25 hp beta. Probably could have settled for the 20hp but for $500 difference I just thought bigger is better. It starts. It has reverse. Happy days.

However, new donk which is a little lighter than the old 12hp(!) and smaller plastic fuel tank in place of big old ss one has slightly lightened the load aft of the keel. Now cockpit doesn't drain easily. Maybe after I fill my fresh water tanks and remove all my tools from the cabin it will. Oh, just realised I'm replacing big old gas cylinders at stern with smaller lighter ones. D'oh! And when I get more anchor chain...

Fully reconditioned Bukh DV10 LSME.
Good motor, but a bit noisy and vibrates a bit at idle.

1977 yse8 yanmar 8hp, 1 inch shaft, hydraline 3 blade adjustable folding prop.

The prop is overkill for the boat and I think previous owner wanted better "performance" out of the poor old engine.

3 goes with adjustments now and I think I've got it right. Got rid of the smoke and unburnt fuel going out of the exhaust, and can cruise about 4.5-5 kn comfortably, with a little bit in reserve.

I do pray a little every time I start it, but so far (tempting fate) it has never missed a beat. Probably put a bit over 200 hours on it in the last couple of years.

Would LUV a new 15hp anything!
