Seems like a lot of horsepower for a 34 footer.

Diecon sell marinised Kubotas which are actually second hand (ie imported used engines). They marinise them and put a new gearbox on them.

Their prices are pretty good. See here. http://www.corcooling.com.au/marinised-engines/

I'd be curious to know what his 34 footer displaces?

By comparison, a single 27hp engine can easily push along my 38ft cat, which displaces 6.5t, at 7 knots - a Volvo Penta D1-30 to be precise.
(Or 8.5 knots with both engines, but it's seldom worth burning twice the fuel unless I'm in a rush.).

Theyre auctioning ex postal transit vans for $1000 each!! All got blown 5th gear! But thats a near new diesel that could be marinised...
And then theres tankers dumping their old lifeboats overboard. Might be obscure russian diesels in them buut could suit diesel enthusiast!?
Ive seen the old listers complete with marine gearbox on ebay 'running condition' sell for as little as a few hundred dollars..
Wasnt there a perfectly nice bukh sold on ebay for like $500? Commented on a seabreeze post recently. Itll cost a crate of beer to have it installed maybe.

Thanks guys it's a timber boat built 1903 guessing her displacement would be around 7t he said he was after around 30 hp I myself am not sure what the minimum hp is that he would need I would rather a few spare ponies than not enough personally. Our ketch is 16t and loves every bit of her 75hp Perkins !

They would be an excellent buy. Being a used engine all the stresses in the block and head would have been relieved by the many thousands of heating and cooling cycles.
