For those that didn't know,
The high that's bringing you southerners a little ray of sunshine, That high is causing havoc on north tropical coast bringing strong winds and the odd shower! Today we had a maxium wind gust @ 29 knots with a chilly 30.5 degrees and our first shower in 3 months! Even some Victorian tourists where whinging that it was cold! Bring on the next cold front for the Great Australian bight!

On the other hand, Tasmania has been blown a metre east with the strong winds.

Gee Southace, I quite enjoyed yesterdays sail. I only saw the guts go over 30knts a few times. Had the wind about 20 deg forward of the beam with 2 reefs in the main and the slutter up. (slutter = cutter on a sloop). Wasn't even running the rail in the water and sat on about 6-7knots as I crossed the passage. The only issue I had was with the wind chop, as it didn't even seem to be more than a boat length apart and I had to duck a few times as the spray came over the cockpit. Glad my boat is steel (12 tonne) and doesn't lose much momentum when dealing with these little buggers. Also I was glad I wasn't on a cat. Now I have to admit I made my trip before the tide changed and the wind chop starts standing up against the current. The Whitsunday Passage can be be a bit uncomfortable when this happens.

The highs this year are centred a lot further north than usual.

When I was chartering in Cairns some years ago a 1032 hp high centered over Bass Strait would mean a strong wind warning at Cairns.
