We had a interesting experience in a race on Saturday on the Huon
We were heading down the river with the kite up and the three leading boats had already rounded the mark and were coming back up the river also with kites up with
When we were about a boat length away from them all of the spinnakers collapsed as we entered the area wher both breezes met
Not often you see boats heading towards each other with kites up
Regards Don
Interesting !!!!!! Never seen that !! Did anyone get a pic ?
I suppose if it's going to happen your location is the odds on favorite for that sort of thing to occur .
Hi Sands
We were in a north westerly off the land and the other three boats were in a developing south easterly sea breeze
Not sure about the pics but sometimes club members will chase us and get some good shots
Regards Don
Hi Sands
The course was two laps from Port Huon around a mark just south of Surges Bay on the Huon
Lots of weird stuff happens at 43 degrees south
The other day in about 60 seconds it went from a light breeze to a steady 60 knots with gusts to 75 knots here that lasted for around 20 mins during a race
Regards Don
This is a 40 footer in 60 knots on the river during a race a couple of weeks ago
I actually think these were taken after it had settled down as the headsail if furled
Most of the boats in the race sustained some damage with shredded sails and broken fittings as the change came through so quickly there was no time to reef, drop or furl sails

Racing on Pittwater is a bit like that Don. Such are the land effects on the wind in a narrow stretch of water, that yachts are running under kites in both directions is not uncommon. First time I saw that, caused some head scratching!
Gotta love those Tassie 'breezes'. I'm with SandS,you can keep those down there where they belong!.

Fairly common here on the Swan River when a weak seabreeze is fighting the easterly, and the breeze channels down blackwall reach. Can make for interesting "right of way"rules at a mark! ![]()
Yeah, personally I pull the pin on a 25 plus forecast .
To much like hard work ! And to hard on the rig
If I wanted to get the crap scared out of me , I could go shopping with the trouble and strife ! ![]()
Hi Sands
I have been told that the Hobart clubs don't race if the forecast is over 25 (I could be wrong though) but down here it is left up to the skippers to decide
On the boat I crew on if Jeff, the skipper can get it out of the marina without hitting anything and two other boats are willing to start he will give it a go
