Would the gelcoat (white colour) on older 70's era fibreglass boats contain lead as you would expect paint from that era would. If so would the lead be on the surface or under another layer?
If you do have to sand something that does have lead paint, does the mask really stop you from inhaling all the lead particles? Or only about 80%?
Mate...invest in a good quality mask from the boat Chandler or bunnings. The ones with canisters for filters....and choose the canister filter that suits your needs. Don't use those dodgy p1 or p2 or p3 paper masks with the elastic bands. I would probably be dead by now from inhaling fiberglass dust. No joke. dead or very very ill. If I didn't own a top quality mask.
Don't sand dry. Wet and dry, contain the resulting wet/glass mix in something absorbent so it doesn't dry off to a powder. Gloves / long clothes to keep the the stuff off your skin. This is not a mid summer job....
