Just looking through Afloat and had a look at Yachthub etc on the weekend. Is it my imagination or are yacht asking prices rising.
Eg Compass 29 $30K, Cav 32 $52K, Kaufman 30 $48K, Swanson 31 $49.5K.
I guess it depends on the condition of the boat and how keen the vendor is to sell.
A lot of private sellers gauge their own selling price, often taking into consideration how much money they have spent on the boat and of course as we all know from past experience, what you want isnt necessarily what your going to get.
I thought for a while that the market value was dropping but it does seem to be creeping upwards again. I don't know why because there are literally thousands of boats on offer. It has always been a buyers market.
I was checking yachthub a couple of days ago. I was amazed at the number of boats just sold. The ones that sold were well priced though, some there will never sell. Cav 32 in the afloat magazine is still for sale for 52 thousand, how long is it now, 5 years?.
Gday MB, having been in the market chasing a NS38 the last month or so I agree that there is an up-trend to prices again.
The most reasonable explanation I can offer is that with the rapidly falling Aussie dollar, the Euro and US boats are all now being hedged at a US to AU currency exchange rate of approx 70c compared to 90c > $1.00 of the last 2 years. So all of a sudden a new Beneteau is costing over $300k instead of $240k and this therefore has a flow on effect to all other used boats.. So my only advice is to buy quickly if you wish to upgrade because soon the currency will be hedged in the mid 60c..
Ramona, Interesting what you say about the Cav. There was one on Yachthub I looked at last year. It was very well presented, fully equipped and well set up. It had the NZ rig and not the Aussie rig. (NZ rig is a little taller and used on the NZ boats before the molds were shipped to Aus after Piggy Muldoon single handedly stuffed the boat building industry in NZ in the 70's)
I would have bought it but someone else came up with the asking price while I was procrastinating. Asking price was 34k and a bargain. Some people just put to much on the purchase price hoping someone will just fall in love with the boat.
The dollar value makes sense but I doubt it is the only or major reason. I am confident asking prices have risen and like Ramona have noticed an increasing number of boats sold. I have received 2 calls in the past week about MB and she hasn't been advertised beyond comments on Seabreeze. I think the market had reached a low point and had to bounce. But is it a dead cat bounce?
For very late model yachts, I think the falling dollar argument holds true.
For older yachts, I think it could be record low interest rates that might be spurring the market. Low interest rates are reflective of a weak economy, but if you feel pretty secure in your income, why not dip into that cheap mortgage or bank deposits that are going nowhere, and spend just a bit on something you've really wanted?
Another factor could be the rapidly increasing retiring population, probably quite a few that want to get a yacht, but not spend too much of their retirement income?
No signs the economy is about to change any time soon!
may be off topic, but paper currency is being printed and printed and printed all over the world. This makes it worth less which makes thing seem like they are more expensive.
It is the first time in history that everyone at once is printing money/ diluting the money supply.
The greeks did it first in 400bc mixing copper with gold before they fell to the spartans.
fiat currency(currency backed by a promise) has NEVER survived all throughout history.
The USD has decreased in value by 95% since the federal reserve started printing it in 1913.
Electronic money is another illusion altogether.
A good boat will be worth more than money in the bank IMO.
Unless you have gold/silver chances are your money sitting in the bank is becoming worth less and less and less.
BUY A BOAT!
Possibly the reason for an apparent general rise in yacht SALE prices (not list prices) is that most of the dungers have been taken out of the market by the desperates and are now languishing in a different backwater from the one in which they were bought.
If that is the case then most likely the general standard of yachts on offer is higher.
There is always the odd genuine bargain about. Whether these examples below are bargains or not is open to conjecture.http://www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/private/used/SSE-AD-3151108/1986-Custom-YACHT?cr=5&psq=%28%28%28%28%28BoatType%3DSail%26HullType%3DMono%29%26Price%3Drange%5B10000..35000%5D%29%26LengthInFeet%3Drange%5B30..35%5D%29%26%28%28%28SiloType%3D%5BDemo%20and%20near%20new%20boats%5D%7CSiloType%3D%5BDealer%20new%20boats%5D%29%7CSiloType%3D%5BDealer%20used%20boats%5D%29%7CSiloType%3D%5BPrivate%20used%20boats%5D%29%29%26Service%3DBoatsales%29&pso=0&pss=Price

This one looks good and is a very similar style of yacht to my Lotus 9.2. Read the blurb. quite interesting.

This one has been for sale for a while. I rang this guy up over a year ago when I think he was asking a bit more money. My first two yachts were Spencers. A Javelin 14 ft skiff and an Adrian 24 ft keeler. Spencer yachts are great.

I think there was only for of them buried in there
I don't know how that works but that was them but there were six.
The Kan Walker, John Spencer and Peter Joubert yachts look to be the best of them to me.
This baby would be some fun at the right price!

"Magic Dragon" is an exceptional buy. Needs two speed self tailing winches and it would make an ideal retirement vessel.
I agree with the thread so far I have seen a good bit of interest of late in my Jarkan 39. Several people have had a look and made some positive noises in just the last couple of weeks. The tone of the negotiations now does not seem to be so much about the money, where before you needed a crash helmet and very thick skin. I am a lot further down the track with negotiations now than i have been in the last couple of months. I am even willing to do a trade for the right sort of boat which makes me quite flexible in doing a deal. One party said they are in the market for a bigger boat now as they don't reckon cheap interest rates will last and they want to lock in their debt. Roll on cheap interest rates, I will let you know how I go over the next couple of weeks.
Are the cockpit seats in Magic Dragon really as narrow as they appear in the photo?
They do look narrow in the photos! The moldings are identical to mine and I can assure you the dimensions are anatomically perfect for the average person. The high backed backrests should be compulsory in all offshore vessels.
