hi all

my apologies, i know you have discussed this endlessly but ........

im looking to buy my 1st keelboat. i'd like something safe, forgiving, and a little bit "classic / old school".

budget is about up to 40k ish

i will be doing some coastal trips on the east coast (day trips in the bay with the family and overnighters up to a week away) with a dream of sailing to lord howe, ok, maybe one day ..... but that may be in the next boat !

the wife is insisting on an enclosed head, with sleeping for 3, maybe 4, though i will be sailing solo too.

i was drawn to the compass 28 / 29 and maybe the easterly 31, or a duncanson 35 ??

i did come across a vancouver 27 in townsville which looked nice too - http://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/vancouver-27-reduced-to-sell/135679 - but should that bukh 20 be a worry, and that fusebox ??

Any thoughts ??

id be obliged for any assistance !

Lots of cheap boats around. As I have an Adams 31 I always look at them as they come up for sale. This one looked interesting: http://yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/adams-31/147655

Bit confused about the date. Sounds like a 2006 hull but why did it need new hatches? Maybe the old ones leaked. Anyway, worth a look IMHO. Think you'd get it cheaper due to this market.

No that is terrible advice. That is the market I am looking in, so stay well away.

Yes. I wasted $800 driving up there last weekend to have a look at it and have a sail.

A lovely yacht and a bargain too but NOT a VDS 34 design No. 391.

It is 30' 10" and is design No. 221. It is a weekender/day sailer and club racer. Only just has head room under the cabin top and is crouch/stoop for the rest of it.

I still really favour the Defiances.

That must have been a bit disappointing .

The defiance has about 6' 2" headroom in the saloon , but as you get to the mast it's about 6' and forward of that it's a Stoop

The defiance hulls that I have seen have been good ,

The east coast 31 hulls have been a 50/50 bet on bubbles . Some worse than others .

A recent edition of Classic Boat magazine features a couple of Vancouver 27's,one of which had an adventurous sail out of Scotland to Norway.

They seem popular up that way as no doubt in Canada as well, but not too many out here in Australia.

I would think your trip times between Ports will be somewhat slow in this type of vessel, however they do look a sturdy yacht with good interior volume.

The one in Townsville does look pretty clean with the owners having done a great deal of work on it.But now heading towards 40 years old, some good independent advice is a must.

You may care to look in previous forums here on the Bukh engines, which has some good information on offer as well.

Hope this helps-C.R.

Hi Keelkicker,
I cant believe no one has yet suggested a Clansman 30, very capable offshore yacht, many have circumnavigated, full keel and classic design. Strong as, solid glass below waterline hull. And yes I do have one for sale. See my add in buy/sale, under your budget too. Perfect for you.

Cheers Billy

Hey Billy, Where is the ad for your Clansman?
It so happens I am off on an 800km bike ride each way tomorrow morning to have a look at one. I might check yours out when I get back.
Cheers, Charles

I think I have seen your fair yacht "Albatross" advertised elsewhere.

The "Clansman" is a great yacht. Fast, safe and sea kindly design and reputably very well built.

Perfect east coast cruiser for a couple, three at most. They are getting a bit long in the tooth now, so if I was to be buying one, I would be looking for one with only one or two previous owners and would have an expert survey done on it before buying.

There are a couple advertised at $40-45 k which I think is waaay over the top for a 30 plus year old 30 footer.

$30k I reckon pulls them up and it would have to be Mickey Spit with all the gear.

Just my opinion, and we all have one.

Done my first load of washing in a machine yesterday in 9 years!!! No kidding I was enjoying washing by hand on board, having deck space and 1" handrails to hang off makes it easy.

This is the best one that's been recommended so far keel kicker, be tough if it needs a engine and all. The rest are just toy boats!!! Iv done many miles on a twelve ton cruising yacht and size does matter! And it's not the length that tells you how big a boat is too, Classic is the go with design. Beam = comfort .

Im not sure what you are saying Dezman. Is my Clanny the best deal or you reckon the pacific 36 is better. Its $25000 more and needs a new engine and rigging. Shotchas, from what I know his budget doesn't allow that.

Your's canny sounds like a good deal and for someone on a budget it's a steal, gee how cheap do we have to sell our boats I don't know!!!
But Shotchas has set his mark at 40,000 and the pacific is a lot of boat, a new engine at 7000 plus fitting it he needs to buy at 30,000.
I would say if he can't stretch the money towards $50,000 all up for a comfortable ocean yacht then go with yours to be out there having a ball.

I don't know where my quoted budget figure of 40k came from, it must have been someone else as mine is a lot lower. (Over 60, unemployed, not much chance of finding another job, so reckon may as well go sailing and enjoy the time I have left to do things!)

Billy, I don't think I'll be coming to look at yours soon. I'm still waiting for a mooring so nowhere to put one at the moment unless it's out of the water.

I just had a 1,700Km round trip by motorbike over two days to look at the last one. Bloody awful trip with road works every five minutes up the Bruce Hwy, must have been stopped a hundred times. Took the inland road back, managed to miss the emus and roos (only just) while traveling - ahem - pretty fast, then got stung with a speeding ticket for $366 at Gayndah, followed by road works all the way back as far as Coolangata.
Ok, got that off my chest.
The cop was nice to me. His radar said 135 and he put me down for 130 which saved a couple of hundred.

Dezman, if yours is still around by the time I get a mooring, and not rusted out from sitting so long, I would be interested to have a look.
Cheers guys.

Moorings are made to be left behind in your wake, I lived on anchor for 8 years. Good incentive to keep moving looking for that magic spot, bummer about the ticket.
What was wrong with the boat you went so far to see? A link and info would be nice.

Dezman,

I discussed it a bit more on another thread: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Sailing/General/Osmosis-repair-and-hull-repaint/

The hull would require more work than I realised. At first it sounded like maybe a couple of days work where it is, then have it put it the water.

In reality it would need the hull stripped, treated and re painted. This would be too much to do at a distance, so bringing it back to my place seemed a better option to do the work properly without rushing. I would have to get the boat very cheaply to cover the costs.

Now I'm trying to figure out if a semi could get down my driveway or if a rigid axle table top could be used to transport the boat. I once hired one with an 8m tray which managed the driveway but not sure if this would be big enough for the boat. I'll get some more quotes tomorrow. If it sounds feasible, then I'll make an offer!
