Northern burbs have lots of mud to launch from cat. Or the southern bay area have sandy little beaches and mud

It has been a while since sailing in Brisbane but I would highly recommend the following:

Bribie Island - mainland side
Redcliffe (Humpybong area)
Lake Cootharaba (for a weekend)
Victoria Point to Coochie Mudlo for a lunch adventure (not much beach though at Victoria Point)
Gold Coast broadwater
Lake Samsonvale - probably the pick for teaching your son but may need to join the club for access - I don't think it is expensive.

Hi Cattrap. Apologies for taking so long to respond. I have had the same problem as yourself, having bought a hobie 16 recently to sail with the kids. I have found it extremely difficult to find anywhere to sail 'off the beach' unless you belong to a club. I have had a good look around Brisbane, and coming from the southside, I have found the following to be the best spots:

- Wellington Point - off the main ramp on the Eastern side
- Thorneside - there is a public ramp which goes into Tingalpa Creek. Painful at low tide as you have to navigate through the long channel into the bay
- Public Ramps in Manly boat harbour - Scary due to the amount of traffic and very little room to manouver a cat which doesn't like tacking
- Victoria Point - Haven't been there but have been advised that it is a good spot to launch from and to go over to Coochiemudlo
- Humpybong - Sailed there years ago in a skiff but a good spot from memory just a bit far to drive to if you live on the south side

Most other good looking spots have been bollarded off. It probably would pay to join a club if you are considering going out regularly.
