Just wondering your thoughts on my predicament...
I have sailing experience on many different types of craft. Mainly on dams and in bays.. At the moment i have a Roberts 25 on a trailer in my back yard in South East Queensland. It has been there for the last 12 months. We are moving to Townsville and wondering what your thoughts are on the best way to transport it there... Trailer or sail it. I don't have any experience in long distance sailing.. Do you think a 25 ft would be up to the challenge and how much time would i need to allow for such a trip. Your thoughts are appreciated..

I think the yacht would not have a problem sailing to Townsville, the only problem I can see would be the skipper, are you able if you had the time to find someone with experience that could help you sail her, it would be a great trip and you could sail up through the inland waterway, I have no experience of sailing in Queensland but am sure
it would be a great trip should you pick the right weather. good luck with your move.

I know of a lot of smaller boats who have successfully done the trek up the Queensland coast, e.g. Compass Careel 18, Sunmaid 20, my late dad's Triton 721 whose hoomans picked their weather and took their time...citing what Disraeli advised as well.
Think you would be doing a lot of motoring in a Roberts 25 as they're kind of known as 'floating caravans'.........not my words............and no offence intended
. So factor in fuel costs. It will be slow trip!!
Have a look at some charts, Lucas guide, etc. etc. and see if the trip is something you think you would like to do. This time of year is a beaut time to do it with se/sw blowing you all the way up the coast.
The trip itself is fairly easy with the longest stretch the first from Brisbane to Wide Bay Bar. We call in for a breather at Mooloolaba then time it for tide and dawn to cross the Bar(which is what everyone does) into the Sandy Straits.........smooth water all the way up to Hervey Bay. Thence it's pretty much day hops all the way to sunny Townsville.
Just lots of factors to look at. How much time you've got? How much patience you've got for a slow trip? How much tolerance you have for each other's company? Who's gonna make the journey with you?? Got some experienced friends/family??
Do some reading up on Wide Bay Bar especially Majik. She can be beautiful..when she's asleep....and she can be positively 'orrible when she wants to be.
Get some quotes on road transport with a dedicated boat transport company. You may be pleasantly surprised.

A friend of mine is currently doing just what you're planning from Laurieton in NSW. At present he's at Urangan and heading for Burnett. Solo all the way, with little recent experience in long distance sailing. Care is the most important consideration, and erring on the side of caution.

Write to him and see how he's fared in his 25 foot Top Hat.
If you do go by sea though, do as others have suggested and plan carefully, and make sure you're boat is really properly sea worthy.

easier ,quicker, safer to fix trailer and go than fix boat and go.
