Hi guys
Over the last couple of years I have had this thought of wanting to get into real sailing, its a nagging luring sensation that wont go away. I'm getting more and more interested and find myself reading sailing books and articles / movies on the net. I also enjoy reading what you guys have been up to with your boats.
The problem I have is a lot of the sailing terminology goes straight over my head! Is there a good book anyone can recommend that will have me sorted with all these sailing words / terms?
And if ones goal was to one day maybe do a bit of cruising, where would be a good starting point? I have no real desire to race. The only wind sport I have experience in is kitesurfing, and a tiny bit of windsurfing in the late 80's.
Appreciate any advice..
Hi Cpt,
By your profile, you're just up the road from me. I'm in Iluka.
I sail out of Hillarys Yacht Club. Though you said you don't want to race, its a great way to get introduced to keelboat sailing for free and pick up skills very quickly. There are always boats willing to take on a zero time crew member to help get you started.
we are racing tomorrow (Sunday) and you're welcome to come along and try it out on our boat (Delphia 40) which is more cruiser than racer. We race for fun.
if you are interested, send me a PM and I'll give you more details.
I recommend the Ryan series of books starting with competent crew, and taking it from there
plus take up the generous offer to crew!,
a great way to learn
just get sailing
opb good before your own boat
good luck

+ 1 for racing as a way to learn , it will show you all points of sailing and manoeuvrings , and its fun!!. My advice would be, take any opportunities you find to get on a yacht with an experienced skipper willing to teach ...
go for it !!
Thanks guys. Was hoping to have some kind of idea on the lingo before stepping aboard to avoid being completely useless!!
free radical, awesome offer, will be difficult on Sundays due to other commitments. Should change after footy season and would def like to take up that offer.will pm you tomorrow.
Thanks heaps.
Must be some other newbie books some people could suggest.
