The Tophat is about as much boat as you can fit into 25' and sails better than many its size. I've owned a Bluebird and raced on a Tophat Mk I. The plastic ones came out of the same factory as I recall - Form-it at Gosford.
The Mk 1's were built by Baker. Over built and will probably last for 100 years plus. {now around 40 years}
Mk 2 and 3 came from Form-it, same hull mould, but different decks and internal finish. Lighter construction and the last one was built in 1986.
A fully functioning cruising Top Hat with inboard is fetching around 15K at present. The 3 to 4k TH's are only weekenders if that.
That's OK, but for the mooring you will have to check with maritime that they will allow you to buy boat/mooring and then put another boat on it.
Moorings are usually approved for a size of boat.
If you do what you want to, you may find that the next bloke on the waiting list gets the mooring and not you!
Ask maritime the questions first!
I already have a mooring and would put TH on mine. The guy who owns the TH leases the mooring off someone who doesnt live in sydney and supposedly has a few moorings scattered around that he sublets for 4 times the amount. That ****s me actually. I told my mate who wanted the mooring that he would risk alot. Noone will insure you if boat owner & mooring leasee are two different people. Ill check her out anyway. The guy is desperate to sell and just reduced her from 9k.
PM me the name of the TH and I might be able to tell you something about her.
On the mooring thing if the boat that should be on the mooring is away for more than 28 days you have to inform maritime.
Don't know what that will mean for me to me when I leave mine for a year while I sail around Aus next year.![]()
