knowing that a boat is worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it, i thought that i might start a thread that captures some known sale prices.
the only place in my mind that captures boat prices is auctions and friends of friends you may know that just purchased their new dream
Ebay seems ok but time and again the same sold boats popup that have previously been sold it seems either buyers pull known they paid to much or maybe the seller was shill bidding and bought their own boat!
please add your own knowledge and post an archive of the for sale advert if you can as it will obviously disappear shortly after the boat is sold.
anyway i thought this might be a good idea and ill add more as i go to more auctions over the coming months.
so the first off:
Arends that was sold 16/3/13 for $65,500
link to boat here:

2009 DELPHIA 40 was sold 16/3/13 for $170,000
link to boat here:

This thread is a great idea as I (we) intend to return to sailing soon so will be in the market for a cruising yacht later in the year. I will certainly add to it as the search intensifies!![]()
Re the Arends that sold on weekend for $65.5K, if that's the one that sold at auction in Brisbane I don't think that number includes the buyers premium fee of 8.25% which would take the sale price up to $71K
this looks a bit cheap for an S&S 34http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yacht-S-S-34-/190812663126?pt=AU_Boats&hash=item2c6d522d56
although the reserve has not been met so i assuming the actual price will be higher
That is because it isn't an S&S34. It might be but it is not likely to even be an S&S design noting the consistency S&S designs have and that this boat does not fit the S&S shape.
The link shows an S&S34 bottom sides or check the S&S34 Association website at:
www.ss34.org/
The sellers are lying to try to cash in on the S&S34 name. It is quite common to see boats falsely advertised as an S&S34.
I see Morning Bird has the engine over keel and smaller rudder with no lower counter balance.
That is pretty much the way Cicely June is. Is she also the Mark 1 single spreader rig with 4 lowers?
The engine over keel configuration with the propeller just behind the keel is a brilliant design concept from Olin Stephens. Maximum efficiency for the propeller with much tolerance with engine to prop shaft alignment.
I have been doing some good work on CJ (or Sea Jay) this week.
She has been sitting in the hard stand for the last 3 1/2 years waiting for someone to make a decision. So I have made it. Scrubbed out the anchor locker, fwd cabin and shower and head area.
Uncoupled prop shaft, removed drive flange, removed prop shaft and then prop, reconditioned stern gland, wire buffed prop and touched leading edges up with a file, replaced coupling bolts and drive key, checked tapers and linnished bearing and gland areas of shaft with emery tape.
Removed alternator and raw water cooling pump, removed hoses and anode plugs and flushed cooling system with fresh water. There was some white and black crap came out of that after the engine being sitting idle for more than 5 years.
The engine is a Yanmar 2 QM 15 or 16 and seems to have less than 1000 hours of usage from log and hour meter.
So with me on the hand crank and old mate Terry on the decompressor lever, we tried for a hand start, twice or more. Not a chance. To start with it is a cack handed rotation and the clearance of the crank with other parts of the boat are such that removal of a thumb nail or tip of a little finger is almost assured. Add to that a 16 to 20 compression ratio in the engine, then a 100 CCA battery became a necessity.
The 100 CCA battery did the trick and started it on first compression.
The starting of the engine accomplished, we ran it for 20 or so minutes at the full range of revs with just a trickle of water and no part of the engine or exhaust manifold became more than warm to hold one's hand on.
So there it is, the yacht is near ready to be launched as a motor boat; I have a correct mast that needs to be rigged and stood (cost about $4,000) and I have fallen in love with the boat all over again.
The conundrum is that I have a $1,000 deposit and a verbal agreement for a sale settlement on 1/4/13 at $16,000.
I also have a steel Van De Stadt 34 about 100 km away from me in Maryborough on the hard stand that recently got flooded inside up to the deck that needs about the same amount of money spent on it.
Which one is the keeper????
A bit of work and CJ is worth a great deal more. No surprises there. Keep her. She has a pedigree and a history.
Although the last Swarbrick built S&S34, MB is a standard Swarbrick Mk1, skeg hung rudder, early keel sweep back and single spreader rig. The engine in the centre is great but does mean a longish shaft, a bit more shaft noise and a need to avoid slamming the throttle either way.
The best balanced boat short of expensive modern craft, such as YENDYS the TP52 I crewed back from Southport a few years ago.
On topic, crap S&S 34s have been selling cheaply and then having lots of dollars spent on them. What is a good one worth?
Honoring an agreement is a two way street. To date I have honored my part and have given the other party every opportunity to honor his part.
One thing is for sure. If he does not pay me for it by the agreed date I will not be giving him the boat.
I just sent the guy a text.
"No more pussyfooting around "name". I need to get on with my life. Settlement by April third or no deal."
Would that satisfy your moralistic stance frant???
Yes. They bought the yacht, all done and dusted months ago and I am still good mates with them.
I was just on the phone with them tonight and offered a couple of head sails I have to them for free. Not ready for them yet so I will just hang onto them till they are.
