Thanks..
No it was the 4m with the 428cm mast. & 95ltre rocket.
It was pretty hairy sailing.Pretty consistent 25kts & choppy as especially as there was a trimaran race on .. cripes in the middle of them it was moguls!
I did borrow a 23cm wavefin and that did help the board be pretty controllable ( considering the conditions)..Ive ordered a 26cm freeride so once I get that life should be a bit easier..( usually 30cms)..

Well done in those conditions.
Are you sure you are not ready for a smaller board ??

grats!

planning gybes are not easy. you learn how to do a survival gybe early; sure it's ugly but keeps you dry. planning out of them takes a long while to crack.

can you pin what you did differently to make this one plane out?

and next stop: duck or lay-downs?

It's a sweet feeling. You will get a addicted to them. Gybes that you don't plane out of save you going too far downwind but they don't have the same buzz.

My turn next OK...oooh I'm so envious.

Did you shut the brain down to do it?

OK, so what's the trick to doing them in choppy conditions? I'm buggered if I can come close.

I've heard all the carve on a chop/wave face but they are travelling at 2 knots and I'm going at 20. I end up crashing/bouncing through them every time, and coming off the plane.

BTW the most important thing I found on flat water was the footwork. As soon as I did that right (See Guy Cribb video on YouTube) they just started happening. I'm talking FLAT water.

Keep pushing down on the boom. You'll be amazed.

That said, choppy conditions do make it hard...

Cant afford one..Ive got an old 86ltre waveboard..It was little less choppy where I gybed but still choppy. The 95ltre was well behaved.. someone watching said my board looked the smoothest out there.. cripes I wouldnt have wanted to be on the others!

I've been watching videos & realised all my bad habits so I've gone back to scratch & reteaching myself..After initailly getting the ****s with falling in every gybe instead of 20% of the time I resigned myself to just get over it & get into it.Dont worry about stuffing up. Everytime I do one & sploosh I think ok what did I stuff up that time & try & fix it next time..Having to waterstart after every turn tires me out but my waterstarts are improving! Im looking forward to the day when I can get around clean each time & save my energy for fun stuff!

Ive changed my rig change from overhand to underarm reach which means I dont stand up as I change.. trying to get really low as I get ready to gybe ( unhook / foot out etc) + stay low.Keeping the front arm outstretched so the rig is further from my body + oversheeting with the back hand further back on the boom as I enter ( not very good at that). Slip the front hand up to the mast before you flip the rig.
One thing I have trouble with is allowing myself to get pulled forward with the rig as you enter.. scared..the few times Ive tried I stuff up.I landed on something when I fell in the sail last night & the ribs are sore today.. actually the whole body is buggered..but anyway.
Also bend the knees , or I think its bend from the ankles and push down on the boom as you gybe for mast foot pressure to stop the board jumping around..
I'm certainly no expert .. but give me another season...
So in summary I think the things that have helped the most are changing to underhand grip to flip the rig , pushing down on the boom ,boom shaka ( front hand to mast before flip) and changing my attitude to more of a get in & have a go bugger the consequences & looking stupid..
Also being on the small board I just do strap to strap gybes so i dont have to worry about the foot change until the exit. Its going to be a whole new ball game on the bigger board..

I think I try & do too tight a gybe.. Ill have to remember to go wider to keep the speed..I hate having to get back upwind though!

Congrats Sue.

Where were you sailing and what day was it?

I am looking forward to a sail at the "Slips" on Friday arvo if I can managed to get there.
All things being equal, will be there.

Will keep an eye out for you. You will be the only lady carving it up.

To a degree.. Ive been practising the rig flip grip on land & the foot change ( twist ) ..not that I had to do that with the little board.IDo it heaps on land so when you get on the water thats one thing you dont have to think about. I also used the demo day to get on a big stable board in light winds & practise gybing on a forgiving board..( foot change , rig flip etc)
In the old days Id just fly into a gybe throw the rig & catch it again ( no oversheeting , boom shaka etc)..I think I was on a floatier board then.. 9'slalom & a flaoty waveboard. I could probably do more if I just shutdown and did them by instinct but Im just perpetuating bad habits & in iffy conditions they wouldnt work.Thats why Im relearning..

Someone told me to push down on the boom as I go ..+ if your board is small enough do a strap to strap so you dont have to do the footcahnge until the exit..

Yeah go wide at the start. I always make an effort to ride back over my wake after gybing to ensure I get back to where I started. A tighter gybe with planing exit requires faster transitions skills and normally more wind.

Evlpanda: really close chop is always messy and even pro sailors stack a ton, if waves aren't spaced enought o gybe between them. Agree the best you can do is load up the boom to keep the nose down. Sometimes I sail an extra 200metres to find an ideal gybing wave or break in the chop.

I'm not sure that the pros stack a ton in chop; even waaaaay back when I used to race those guys, Robby etc could do a surf-slalom race in mast-high waves without dropping off the plane, and at the slalom worlds you'd be cactus if you stacked once during the entire series.

Two things that could help in chop;

1 - tilt the board harder, so that it's more on edge and the narrow edge can cut through the waves. To compensate for the tighter angle, use less rig lean and body torque.... hard to describe, but it works.

2- watch the inside rail where it engages the water. That gives you feedback on where the board is compared to the waves, which will allow your subconscious to allow for the effect as the board encounters the waves.

3- Make that three things - do the most difficult part (the rig flip and sheeting in) as you go down the chop. That means the board is moving faster, surfing down the chop, which reduces the apparent wind when you flip the rig.

4 - Make that four things. When in doubt, as the boom swings around, bring the mast towards your nose. That means that when you sheet in, the rig is still close enough to your body and you don't end up trying to sheet in while standing too upright (rather than leaning back) and with the boom at the end of your hands.

5- Make that five things. Try making sure your front arm is extended as your drive into the gybe.

I hate the way its 1 step forward & 2 back learning..[}:)] I went out last night & the first 2 gybes I ended up thrown onto the board at the exit ( tell me what Im doing wrong..? )..I had an egg sized lump on my shin after the first time & then B sore knee the 2nd.. I think Ill wear my steamer for a bit of protection until i get my act together..Also I think Ive bruised a rib falling onto the boom in a gybe on Monday and it was really painful. I was silly enough to sail for an hour or so last night but everything hurt like hell & I'm paying for it today....Might have to have a week or two off to hopefully get it better..I dont know if this new gung ho attitude suits my 50 year old body..
I was groaning & hobbling aropund last night on painkillers & my partner said " Youve been sailing for over 20years & you still cant do it.. give up!.."[}:)][}:)]

i see the fact that you're still getting dinged up as a sign that 20 years on, you're still got the fire and you're still pushing yourself. tell him to be quiet and bring you another whiskey...or have i got the wrong pain-killers?
