Why can't I sail a 5.3 S1 on a Kode 80 ?
Same sail with larger board no issue. Same board with a 4.7 or smaller no issue.
But 5.3 on the Kode and it seems to buck and fight and won't sail level and in control. Doesn't matter if it is over or under powered it does the same thing.
Surely a 5.3 isn't too big for an 80 litre board.
I make no adjustments to fin, straps or mast base from the 4.7 to the 5.3. Pretty well got the fin and mast in the centre of the range and the straps as far forward as they go. It must be OK as with a 4.7 it is great, in fact it is fantastic.
So what do I need with a 5.3 ?
Bigger fin ? Mast track forward ? give up and use a bigger board if it is 5.3 weather ?
?
maybe s1 centre/effort is further back down the boom than other 5.3 sails, and in combination with lack of volume in the tail of this particular board, doesn't work well together![]()
5.3 might be on the upper limit for an 80 litre in any case? 5.7 feels somewhat awkward on my 82L board
i bet there's a clever cookie who can explain this betterer
As a heavyweight I always stepped down to my 80 or 85L boards when it was well powered up 5.3 weather. I can't see a 5.3 is too big for any 80L.
But I get the same thing with max sail size on many waveboards so it can be just "not used to it so it feels funny" or too small a fin.
May be COE as Haircut suggest.
Where has your mast base been? Try 137 - 139cm from tail - if you have not been that far forward yet may be the problem, but that's just an idea it could be anything.

Sail adjustment issue?
Ive let to much outhaul out on my 5.3 before and taken it out on the 89L Kombat and it behaved like a pig, even in underpowered conditions(for a 5.3), pulled it back out to where I normally set it for those conditions(I was experimenting
) back to smooth sailing. done the same with the downhaul too
could the bigger board be offering a bit more stability to the situation?
i have used a 6.0 on my kode 80 about a billion times (i weigh 86 kg) and it used to outplane just about everything on the water - in fact this was my most used combo for the last 2 years.
The Kode 80 is prob more like a 76 litre board
i can almost guarantee that this tip will make your Kode come alive:
- put your mast base in the back 30% of the track.
The Kode 80 is one of the fastest boards you can get your hands on - enjoy it!
Reflex,
do you change mast position or fin between sail sizes ?
Smaller than a 5.3 and I have no problems. In fact I would rate the Kode same as you do, just can't get it to work with 5.3. Never tried anything bigger than a 5.3.
I would find it hard to believe a 5.3 was simply too big, or an S1 was too back handed.
Mast at the moment is dead centre of track, fin centre of box. Front straps centre holes and back strap front holes. Fin is the original Drake 230. I never adjust anything for anything, it goes great from a 3.7 to 4.7 (blades and S1s).
I'll try moving the mast track into the back third and see how it goes.
