We got to test the "Secret" lake on Xmas day and let me tell you that it's fastly becoming my favourite spot to sail. Getting shallower by the day but in the nor'easter and at the southern end of the lake there is more then enough water. Slightly more choppy then the southerly but still rather flat, a bit more of an opportunity for the odd chop hop but it's a great place for gybe practice.....It's good to know that it works in a nor'easter as well

Looks like a fun spot Jas. Freestylers should be frothing over this spot given how flat that water looks, even in a NE

looks really nice, is it north or south of santuary point?

can you tell me what board you're on, is it a JP super sport?

It's north of sanctuary point near Culburra beach, The boards a JP 112? FSW Pro or so the sticker says...feels much more like a 105!
It goes ok when you put the 4 straps out on the rail but not as quick as a SS.

Cheers.

dezza if your not too far away from sanctuary point and want a bit of flat water blasting and brush up on your jibes, at the moment its the place to sail, no need for a weedy because most of the weed died off when it emptied, all we need is an extra 12'' or so of water and it would be perfect

How deep is it mostly? I run an 18cm fin so don't really need much...as long as you can stand up when you fall in i'm sold, makes learning new freestyle tricks so much easier. Next time i'm down Gerroa way i'll have to come and check it out. Is it as windy as Gerroa/the heads there?

Chris, It's mostly thigh deep but deeper and shallower in other areas, I've not been in a spot where I can't touch the bottom. As the crows fly it's not far from Shoalhaven heads and seems to get the full force of the seabreeze, Just like Gerroa it has some holes but not as gusty as Gerroa. It seems to have a wind tunnel effect in one area where you get whipped up to warp speed straight into a super flat section, good for gybes or freestyle tricks(if i could freestyle). I run a 23cm weedy and only have problems from the launching area as it is quite shollow for a bit, but a lighter guy on a freestyle board shouldn't have too much of a problem. Did you get your new weed fin? it would be ideal for there.

PM me your mobile and I'll txt next time we are going.

Cheers

Yeah got that Makani FS weedy, have used it once already and it's pretty sweet. It feels slightly odd to sail as it works at a slightly higher angle of attack than my normal fin so it feels like the board is 'crabbing' a little bit....but it is only 18cm so to be expected I cut my other normal FS fin down the other day too, so it's also only 18cm now, like a boss. Will send you my number, always looking to check out new spots

I've sailed it with an 18cm fin. It's not too bad, from the launch you still have to walk but mostly it's fine. Plus the bottom is weedy rather than rocky so you fin drag rather than suddenly stop. More of a worry is that if you're falling continuously trying some move, you want to do that in the bits that aren't 18cm deep, also you don't want to plant the nose too far into the water.

Hey Chris as Jase said it is on par with wind strength to Shoalhaven Heads in a NE. Ive done heaps of kiting there. The northeaster is strongest at the SE corner where the old telegraph pole is. As you go west of this the wind comes over the trees and is a bit gustier, thats why you have to stay downwind a bit. Entrance opened in April, its now blocked again. Yep another 12 inches of water and it would be sensational.

Still can't see myself driving past gerroa, to another freestyle spot, but is that flat section on port?

174 how long is it you sailed there , the lake is higher than sea level and emptied about last feb and closed around july this year, it's had a huge flush out and a lot of the sea grass died off, the bottom is mostly clean at the moment except for the southern and western sides where there is heavy beds of green weed, the weed is deep under the surface and it seams to tame chop, for some reason the lake produces good speeds , usually i'm not the fastest sailor on the water but 3 out of my last 4 outings i have managed 32+ 2sec and a 23 knt alpha, having said that if we don't get a good top up it will be a longer walk and if we do get a top up the weed will grow and will definitely need a weedy

Not much floating weed/grass, just big clumps of that net like weed. Don't really need a weed fin in the deeper part I think.

The whole thing is flatter than Gerroa ever is on port. I think it's just so shallow the chop is minimal.

Yeah that's the only thing Gerroa doesn't have is dead flat water on Port.. There aren't many places on the east coast with mirror flat water on port.. I'd only need 12cm of water.. But Lake Illawarra has this and it's 1/4 the distance, and it smells fantastic..

Keef, no idea where to find your GPS tracks haha.. Total noob..
