I have a small ding with a crack on the rail of a 2010 Jp the result of hiting a sea kayak
It would only cover the area of 1 cm square. Can I use that Nead It stuff as a perminent repair or is it just temporary? I know I would have to rough up the area 1st so it would bond and sand it back so i could paint it.
Had a look at the Board lady site, but nothing really matches my minor ding.
You can and it would be fine but sanded back and painted it would never look as good at the real deal repairs on the board lady site.
Sounds like it would still be structurally OK (as in it is not going to make the board snap) but for a new board it is worth doing it right.
sand thru with about 80 grade paper until you just hit the foam, so you have a gradual depression about the size of a postage stamp..... nicely blended in to the paint around it.... by that I mean a shallow gradual depression not a hole if that makes sense.
3 or 4 layers of glass and epoxy to fill
sand off excess glass
rub back down to about 300 grade (wet)
one hour job easy (except for the overnight drying time for the epoxy)
Jman I had a look at that other link, and that is how I'd do it for a ding of that size.
If it was any bigger I'd go glass
Real sorry to hear about the damage Jman!
Your probably quite aware but in case your not, the West Systems resins, hardeners & fillers etc. can be purchased at that boat shop near SHQ
Just fill it.
Just make sure that
(1) vent plug is open
(2) do it in late arvo on a falling temp where the sun won't hit it
That ensures no pressure increase in the board will try and push your filler out.
To really up the chances of good repair
(1) remove all paint
(2) put it up on edge so the dent is horizontal (filler won't run off)
(4) if any cracks are thru glass dribble a tiny bit of resin on the cracks with a toothpick and blow it in. Wipe off excess after a couple of mins and do again. This is because filler may not get right into the cracks if it is mixed thick, and I figure anythign you can do to join the glass up again is a good thing.
(4) then mix remaining resin with q-cell or microballoons (whatever ur mate gave u) and fill the ding
rest is self explanatory
of yeah mask around it well, saves having to try and remove filler that dribbled and then you have to sand a big area and paint it later
No glass needed Jerry. Forget using nead-it. If you've got the epoxy that'll be best anyway. Just make sure you rough it up well, like we said.
Marks additional tips are all spot on I reckon.
..... Then you should go back and help that poor sea kayaker salvage his wreck off the bottom of Port Phillip Bay and offer him any epoxy you have left over!
When you say "lesson learnt", I presume that means you're gonna stop watching the girls jogging along the beach front, when you're supposed to be looking where you're going![]()
ah yeah, those ones. They cause all sorts of trouble whenever I let them out of the van. They got a little toey a few weeks back when Tiger was in town!!![]()
