Yeah shark attack stories freak me out. This one was at Crowdy Head at 7pm tonight (Wednesday). Crowdy is only 2 stretches of beachs south from here. Gidget's home break. That's 2 attacks in nearly so many weeks.
The surf conditions have been excellent today at most local breaks, so it was no surprise for someone to keep on surfing till nearly dark....the worst time of day to be in the water.http://www.nbntv.com.au/index.php/2011/03/23/surfer-attacked-by-shark-at-crowdy-head/
Fishermen will be interested to hear that the sharks are coming in close, which means there are other things in there that are attracting them. It's also the time of year when the sea garfish start schooling up close and it's them that everything larger is interested in. If you know what LBG is I think it's going to be a good season.
If you are a surfer (what ever discipline) or swimmer beware.
Has anybody used the shark deterrent thingy which the South African government developed?
A penny for your thoughts....
poor bugger. sounds like it really got hold of him and gave him a thrashing. Whoever you are mate I wish you a speedy recovery!
See this as an incentive to get your gybes down Raf, more time ontop of the board is safe time ![]()
sad to see so many people getting attacked.
i'm always consious of sharks around march and september on the east coast plus i also get out of the water at feeding time.
yeah, i'm not to sure what the deal was with the diver. we had this exact conversation up at burrum where one of the sunny coast guys was looking into getting one.
he thought that the diver had switched the device off to save batteries but i am not sure if this is true or not.
I suggest they put a white line on the sea bed about 1km offshore and make it illegal for sharks to cross it!
I am not trivialising the plight of the two poor guys who got bitten but in the time frame of the two shark incidents I would guess a significant number of people died and even more would have had horrific, yet unreported, injuries from traffic crashes!!
We think nothing of driving to our favourite spot, separated from any number of turkeys driving drunk, drugged, distracted, fatigued, depressed and we are only separated from them by a white line.
I too get a bit jumpy when I'm alone out on the water with my little legs flapping frantically trying to get the sail up out of the water but I'd rather take my chances with the sharks than my fellow motorists!!!
