I'll be lining up in Canberra in a suit hoping my name will be called out by Kevin Rudd as Australian of the Year.
I haven't been nominated, and I haven't done anything worthwhile or helped anybody do anything, but you never know. 18th time's a charm!
I need to update my victory speech though. No need to thank PM Hawke anymore.

You should never joke about going to Canberra, unless you are speeding through on your way to the snow.

We will probably go windsurfing in the afternoon followed by sailing with a colleague on his yacht during the evening in a Pittwater social race. Australia day is a good day to be on the water, keeping in touch with our nautical heritage.

As an ex-pat family in the cold here, we usually have lamb racks on the barbie by -15C and pavlova.

Stella Artois: gee, get a stronger drink, like, milk.

Just made it out of Manly before the ferals ran amok and the riot squad was called.
First time we decided to go where all the crowds are and it was a mistake, just pissed idiots not giving a s**t about anyone else around them. Saw a toddler take a rubber cricket ball in the back and an older lady a sharp frisbee in the back of the head. Just a small minority spoilng it for others like usual.

Shoulda known mate, esp. Manly. Bad mix of locals, ferals, ratbags and tourists. Drunkens from the Steynes.
Even Bondi or the Rocks woulda been better (not a lot).

Sounds like the police and local council are playing it down. I remember going to Manly on holidays as a kid, around 20 odd years ago. It was a pretty good place, layed back with some good natured locals. Nowdays you go there and even in the middle of the day there are drunks fighting or swearing or just laying around. The town centre doesn't feel that inviting or a relaxing place to be.

Too much bad behaviour is being tolerated or even celebrated.

We finished off the Australian Windsurfer One Design titles. It was a damn great regatta, although I am a bit biased!

Fifty seven entries made it the biggest Australian titles in windsurfing by a long way. There were sailors from Fiji, Norway, WA, Vic, NSW, Queensland and the ACT; the keen Tassy sailors couldn't make it. There were five Olympians, a two-time PWA World Cup winner, world champs from wavesailing through to Lasers, the new national champ in Manly Juniors (kids dinghies), and wavesailing champs Scotty O'Connor, Rohan Cudmore and Warren "One Knot" Holder. There were heaps of families; almost 20% of the fleet was women and girls, and about 20% of the sailors were in their teens or younger.

Mainly, it was just about kicking back on the water, doing your best, and having fun. Port Stephens was an awesome place to sail, facilities, club and accomodation were great, and because Wallies can race in light winds even the least experienced sailors got to finish with the main fleet.

Looks like we'll be returning to Port Stephens same time next year. If it keeps growing at the same rate we're looking like having 70+ entries!

First time Id been to Manly for something like that for many years and having grown up around the area I was quite shocked.
Seemed like mostly out of area and on the Corso it was even worse. Mostly drunk 14-18 year olds hiding under the flags draped over them and intimidating the families etc that were just trying to have a nice day.
Another "Cronulla" is just around the corner.
