So I stepped on a fortescue fish at the weekend, it was a little painful but luckily there were some great locals that sorted me out.
Its obvious that a few of us have stepped on the wee beasties, but my question is this ....
Has anyone stepped on one twice? Thrice? Or more?
I once stepped on a fish in the Nambucca River. It was probably a bream as it just punctured the skin in my foot. Once when I was a kid I was wading through a muddy water channel and what I think was an eel slithered under my foot. It scared the bejesus out of me.
In January one night in a shallow inlet my daughter's boyfriend and I both got out of the tinnie at the same time and we both stepped on something flat and squishy that wriggled away, freaking us both out in the process. I then saw a flounder settling in the shallows a few feet away, but we couldn't have both stepped on the same thing that small. Panning around with a torch we both saw a massive ray swim past. One or both of us was bloody lucky. The flounder wasn't so lucky -it ended up as breakfast.
So to answer your question DrJ, NO, but two of us could have stepped on the same thing once each, which is effectively twice.
I stepped on a stone fish or a catfish years ago, never actually saw it, but from the intense pain, the locals were saying it didn't matter which it was, what mattered was to get to a doc asap.
The doc gave me a jab and three different kinds of pills, along with a cream. Didn't stop the pain any though, it was excruciating.
Since we get pretty low tides every now and again and we surf in a sometimes muddy spot, my second trip to that doc is just a matter of time, I suppose ![]()
I also had the eel thing happen to me; as soon as I put my foot down coming back in from a surf, I stepped on what I thought was a piece of garden hose, until a second later it slithered from under my feet! Ugh!
