I have the following sizes:
8.5
7.5
6.5
5.7

Now I need something smaller to be my general use high wind sail but am getting all caught up trying to decide between 5.2 or 5.0, Does anyone have an opinion on what would be best?

Also does anyone rate Aerotech Charge wavesails?

I have a 5.7 sail but need something smaller for really windy days

If you can tell the difference when you have a 5.2 in your hands instead of a 5.0 then congratulations to you. I'm sure either or would be suitable.
Plus if those 2 sizes are a toss up between 2 different manufacturers and you are buying them new then ask the shop if you can overlay one on the other on the floor. I think you'd be surprised at just what you may find.....

A 4.7 wave sail - perfect step down from a 5.3-5.7 - depending on what board your putting it on and how windy - most have a great range - whatever your brand choice -personally it has to be the the sweetest size of all - light in the hands short boom - I it gets me excited just thinking about using my Poison 4.7

I don't think I have actually seen anyone using an Aerotech sail locally - don't even know who stocks them

Yep I rate the Aerotech Charge, especially for high wind blasting in bump and jump conditions, very stable and has a good wind range. I have a 5.0, and it virtually covers me from 4.2 to 5.8 ( I also have older sails in 4.7 and 5.3 but rarely use them, just the 5.0). Can't comment on their pure wave sailing characteristics, but they are popular down here amongst the wave sailors so can't be too bad.

I am surprised you have such small differences between the bigger sizes.

Personally I go... 6.2 -> 5.4 -> 4.7 -> 4.2

I find there is often little difference between running a 6.2 and 5.4 unless it's really marginal. I think you would be fine with a 5.0.

Interesting. Probably get the 5.0 I think.

How about RDM masts? Are these wortwhile for open water sailing (1-2m swells - not surf) or is SDM quite adequate?

I'd go the 5.0...

(Mine are 5.7, 5.0, 4.2 - no gap problems. Wish I had a 3.7 though as well)

As for RDM, I love 'em. If you've got the cash and can afford, I'd definitely get them. I find them so much more responsive. SDM will do the job though. They're a luxury, but one that I could justify time and time again.

The style of sail can make a big difference as far as the sail range goes as well - and as someone pointed out earlier lay a 5.4 5.0 and 4.7 on top of each other and the diffence isn't that much 0.8 sqmetre of cloth - until you change down from your 5.4 when your overdone to your 4.7 - and it feels undercontrol. - the overall power and shape of the sail should also be considered - 6.4, 5.4,4.7 and 4.2 for me

I have powerex RDM 400 & 430 - they make a huge differnce to the feel of your sails - if you can give it a whirl - don't think you would regret it.

My 20 cents worth any way
