The wind seems to have left Adelaide for good
Where in Aus has the best winter sailing? Might fill up the econovan and do a raod trip in a month or two and actually go for a sail for a change!
Well in Victoria our wind switches off too for Autumn, then sometimes right at the end of the season we get two weeks of gales as we go into winter. Our winter was great last year and i am really hoping it is the same this year. Every weekend we had 5.0 conditions, it was totally unreal. We had a stack of northlys![]()
I know QLD is meant to be good in Autumn![]()
North Queensland.
Southerlies can kick in pretty consistently from April - July, plus water and air temps are still boardshort compatible. No waves and it's a 15 - 20kt range in general, but if you fancy a bit of freeride and/or freestyle there are worse places to be......
July is when we get the best winds but Queensland does better... I haven't looked at many sites though.

Thats unreal i have a sister up in QLD, i think now might be a good time to visit her
why is it so windy in Autumn and winter there??
Post monsoon season through summer it settles into it's "trade wind" cycle. Possibly something to do with colder air down south moving up to the hotter north? Not as extreme or persistent as WA though.
Which gets to Greenrooms point - waves Jim, but not as you know them! The swell size it's hitting on the chart now could mean that a lot of the beaches will have smallish waves forming on tidal sand bars, but there aren't many spots that consistently get anything because of the barrier reef living up to its name. Alva Beach off Ayr just south of Townsville was one spot that seemed to get a good mix of both wind and waves. Not sure if it still rates and the local crew might have a few more spots?
There were always plenty of rumours of epic breaks out on the outer reef. Remember sitting on a dive boat in the lee of Ashmore Reef (I think?) watching half mast high swell wrap around the reef into a 20kt southerly thinking WTF! Never got out there with kit though. Not even sure of any who have - would be a full on boat expedition.....
WTF - ????????????????????????????????????? You must have missed something last winter then
Yep i did, havent lived in through an Adelaide winter for 5 years. It hasnt been great for about the last month. I hope there is wind in winter but it might be a bit cold for me!
Thats interesting cause the weekend just been was the first weekend I can recall for the summer that I havent sailed. Could have sailed 3 nights last week but had kids sport on
last weekend was great waves Saturday and reasonable seacliff - weekend before nukin winds at sellicks and kent reserve - and sailed the Monday and tuesday
Just find it hard when people say theres no wind and we've been sailin heaps - and been missing a few as well.
Good luck with your winter trip
I agree with Fletcher. This season wasn't as good as last season; but it all depends on where you live and how many hours of driving time you are willing to allocate to the day. If I lived where you do, I reckon I would have a different opinion.
