I have used Slipicone which is a silicone spray to help conveyors etc run smoothly over rollers and it works a treat,I have had it for years as you do not need to spray alot on the zip or zippers, spray it on about twice a year and all good, think I got it from Blackwoods

The zippers for my jayco caravan bag ends are exposed to road junk and clog up every so often.

everything I've read has told me not to use any lubricant as this (in time) clogs up and makes the problem worse.

I've found that if i hit the zips with a high pressure hose, they get a good clean and they work great!

If you get a zipper that's stuffed, any canvaser can replace them pretty cheaply.

This is a recurring theme.

In my experience, dedicated zip lubes are no better, or worse, than a silicone spray or something like Selleys Dry Lube.

I have a board hanging in my garage contained within a board bag and both zips became lightly corroded which was fixed using malt vinegar applied to the zip which, over about 7 days, ate the corrosion away. An application of silicone and working the zips back and forth once a montrh keeps them from sticking again.

Have a very old board bag in my van and the zips on this became absolutely clogged. Vinegar didn't work and I was going to throw the bag out when I spied my spray can of Permatex Battery Cleaner, part number SA 8 (from Repco). As this was formulated for heavy-duty battery corrosion, I thought I'd give it a try. Was careful to spray only on the corroded zip. As usual there was a massive bubbling as the spray went to work and, in two applications over 10 minutes, both zips were free. Gave the zip area a bloody good rinse, put the board back into the bag and it's been good for the last 6 months. Might be worth a try as a last resort if you are in that situation.

Hardie, given that prevention is better than cure, suggest that all zips be silicone-sprayed then worked back and forth on the first day of each month or when you finish sailing.

Hope this helps.

Absolutely. I have a couple of bags that are as old as I am and no corrosion and no maintenance. However I have other expensive bags that have clogged up in less than a year.

Maybe we need to start a register of the brands that have good zippers and boycot the rest!

this is a good thing..I find having the old zippers changed to bigger plastic zips through the upholstery shop can do wonders..better yet like a friend of mine did changed them to Velcro.
