Board Repair

Need Help.

ive had to dig out a heap of styro and refil with Q-cell to rebuild the outer sandwhich layers, questions is when u fill the void with the Q-cell can you pour it straight onto the styro that is there. or should you put down a layer of glass first with just resin let it go off then fill with q-cell. then do the sandwhich.


I tried to do it all in one go but it didnt really stick to well and cracked out, so the hole is slightly bigger then it was first time round. it also undercut the good part of the deck. spose i have to cut it back more now ???

Did you mix the Q-Cell with epoxy or polyester resin?
Polyester will eat the styro and make big hole.
I've dug deep into a board and filled straight with epoxy / Q-Cell, worked perfectly. I'll take a photo shortly and post.

Hello to all. I am very very new to windsurfing and i just received a 350 elite tyronsea windsurf. i am missing the rear fin off the board and i am not sure where i can get one from. I would appreciate if anybody could give me some advice. Thanks again guys.

I know Decrepit and others are masters at repairs compared to me, but these are the holes I had to fill-

So get some epoxy (West System is the go), add some Q-Cell (or baby powder also works), and get into it. If you want it to look pretty (not like mine) someone else can offer advice
BTW- I did these repairs a couple of years ago, and haven't had to touch them.

just get some packageing foam and glue it in there with 5min araldite, and shape it, then glass mark is on the ball remember that styrene is an insulater

Dunno about that, most packing styro is really low density. Plus for a large irregularly shaped hole how on earth would you shape it to fit with hardly any gaps all round? Any voids are just asking for trouble: any area that is different to the rest of the board is where it will break.
Instead of all that trouble to shape it etc, and still have a few gaps cos it won't fit spot on, I'd just do it right with expanding polyurethane foam.
Not the crap in cans from Bunnings, the real stuff which is 2 pack like Erathane GP.

mark here we have a guy that doesnt have the choice or a range of styrene density" and not are all pack foam is low density", as well polystyrene has about 75% memory , as for polyurethane 25% memory or less, with styrene you can squize a 4"square into a 2"hole and its a perfect fit, "easty" is lucky the area's werent in high pressure loads, if you use polyurethane in high pressure area's eg footstrapps to past the mast track it will remain dented, it has no memory to spring back so you have delamination or a dent that wont spring back

red thumb nazi's: well I guess all the people who red thumbed me can go get fvc&ed, sometimes I do have a rough idea what I'm talking about. Epoxy can get hot when it is in a big deep puddle.

ben: mate she may be easily salvageable depending on how big that void is, send me some pics (and not 3mb each like the other ones were )
out of interest what resin? and what was the temp you were working in... has been pretty damn hot last few days

Good to hear that! So it's not just me. On flat water I have no problems, but when it's choppy I find it very hard to keep the rail in the water to turn, usually it will release half way around and flop, in I go. They are a bit narrower than similar boards that are more recent, so I suspect more skill is needed to gybe them.
