I had a 2005 Starboard Sonic which delaminated completely on the bottom a few weeks ago, from the fin box to forward of the mast track. No I didn't leave it in the sun with the vent screw in- I always remove the screw completely after every session. I have never had this happen to a board before and it makes me wonder if the solvent in the acrylic lacquer aerosol spray paint I used on the bottom after refairing it may have actually slowly seeped through to the EPS somehow and weakened it.. I doubt this would be the case because I repaired the board over a year ago and it had a lot of use since, plus similar repairs on other boards haven't coincided with catastrophic delamination.....but if anybody knows better please speak out so I know not to do it again!
No it's not the paint. I had a sonic 90 it happend to and I know of another 3 of that era 05/06 that it happend to also. Just the particular manufacturing method in that model I guess.
Brad's right, not the paint.
Not sure of the exact cause, but the core foam will eventually fall apart with too much flexing.
Could be they went too light with the core foam, or the bottom skin wasn't stiff enough.
Yeah I thought so- glad you guys do too. I recently painted a relatively modern/expensive board so that's very good to hear!
