Do boards get brittle when they get older? I have just had my board repaired from a puncture on the underside; and today I disconnected the rig to let out some downhaul and as I was reconnecting the rig the board kicked up and punctured the deck with my extention... it really wasn't a hard hit. It is a 2004~ OES. Old/Brittle or just bad luck?
Cheers
Boards are not really designed to withstand that kind of impact.
Pressure at a point.
2004 is not old. I have a board from 1996 and it's still as strong as ever.
i reckon they get brittle,
Depends how much you sail too. i think 2004 is an old board.
I sail every chance i get and generally my boards are ****ed after a year.
also how much is the board in the sun. in a hot car. things like that
2004 if it's lasted that long the board has had a good run
i dunno im on a 6.6 1980`s rrd and its better than any 2010 board. im charging past noobs on new boards. ..Thanks regie..100$ that rrd pisses alover f20 and starboards.
Still gets used. It's seen el mucho use. It's an old production Delta, and I've sailed it a thousand times.
Why does it have to be personal ? It's just epoxy, not your sister.
Actually, I have a couple. Just had a good blatt on the old Windtech last week. I did punch a hole in the bottom with the extension, exactly as you described, about 10 years ago. My fault, not the board.
about the only thing that is likely to make a board brittle is when the laminate is exposed to sunlight over a prolonged period causing the exposed resin to breakdown. Usually only a prob with early polyester/clear boards, most boards these days are a created using epoxy resins (a more flexible resin system than cheap polyester) and then painted to protect the laminate from general wear and tear. Carbon looks sexy when its glossy but if the resin isn't UV stabilized, longevity will be compromised. If you've got a board that you can see the laminate just keep it out of the sun as much as possible
