Am thinking of doin a long weekend to Cairns/ Green Is. in early july.... whats the chance of wind? Would love to bring a speedboard and a couple of small sails- is this likely to be a windy time of the year? Cairns boys...your forecast please.

Hi Mike, July is right in the middle of our season.

The coast is gusty and water rough, if it's overcast it kills the wind, last year was crap but this year is starting to look good. A dry year is a good year.

Green Island is nearly always blowing, but costs about $50 to get there.

Just realised your talking a weekend & small sails, just go to Green, Cairns (Yorkey's) is a gamble
If I'm in town and not working, I'll go to Green with you if you want &/or help you out the best I can, let me know. Just don't wear those shorts !

I believe fitz66 has been to Green a few times.

Give me a yell when you're ready.

I haven't been over since I left Atherton about 8 years ago but when its working its good. The biggest sail I used to take over was a 5.0. Great Adventures took us to the island.

green island is great, usually around 20-25 knots most days in winter with the odd ballistic 30+ days. the last week of june is meant to be the best for wind. for good speed sailing you need a really low tide which exposes the reef in close and creates flat water. it is a bitch to walk out over though when it is like this.

you can also do some jumping on the SW side of the island with a fairly high tide. wind swell breaks on the reef margin and gives you some ramps but you have to watch out for a few big rocks if you sail too far upwind.

I'll be up in Cairns in late July (week starting 29th July) too - for a conference, but with family in tow. Will have to keep an eye out for the seabreeze forum crew!
