Hi guys, greetings from Croatia, Europe. I have a JP Magic Ride 149 from 2023, and a few weeks ago I noticed 2 cracks on the bottom on the board, dont know how this could have happened. I transport my board on top of my car on the rails, but the board is in the bag with the sails so it is protected. the cracks are just from below and run nearly the entire board width, but are not present on the sides. Is the board structure compromised and what do you suggest to do? I am still using the board on the water because its my only board and the weather is nice to sail :/
I plan on repairing it myself by grinding off the area and finish it with a few layers of epoxy and glass mat.

cheers

Looks like structural failure of the bottom composite. At a minimum, you'll have to remove at least a 200 mm band of composite across the board in line with the cracks, feather the edges back to good material and reinstate the composite. Others with more experience can advise on appropriate layups for reinstating the composite.

sort of agree with John.
This is a compression fracture you can tell by the way the surface has buckled upwards, means the board has bent a little. you can do this by a bad nose first landing.
Certainly the area all along the crack has to be ground back to see how much structural damage has been done, The crack may not go all the way through the sandwich, and the bond between sandwich and interior foam may not be compromised. but you need to check.
Just restoring the outer glass layer won't be enough if the whole sandwich is affected..

Sandwich construction needs a tension layer both sides of the high density foam. If that needs replacing, you have to carefully remove the d'cell, leaving about 1cm of underlying cloth, so the interior cloth is continuous in tension, when you lay new stuff over it..

Pretty sure that JP won’t be sandwich. It’s not a beginner type repair and it’s very close to snapping so do it right. As Decrepit’s said, it is a buckling not just crack

I’d do a big diamond at least about 300mm of bottom length, and up rails. I bet when you sand rails there is a crack under the paint.

if it’s wood bottom though, it’s really gonna be a vacuum bag job. Without bending it. That’s hard. So if you have a pro repairer who builds sandwich boards (not just a surf dude) near you go see them.

Its the version without the wood construction in it. How could this have happened, does anybody have an idea?

xtr3m3: Sorry if I'm rude to ask, but how heavy are you ?. Are you a small guy starting out on a big board ?, or an absolute ginormous guy and then some ?

Mark: You can't get worse than this damage IMO. If this guy wants a quick fix to make it last the season ("if he takes it easy"), would epoxy injections along the break work ? - to get him out the sht ?. Also doing the rails as well. Of course, this board would need to be chucked in bin after the season, but this is to get him through the season. What you all suggest above is major surgery and down time. This guy needs make hay while it's sunny. Totally understand that. Boards are not exactly easy to get now days.

What model is it
some are just glass over foam bottom and that’s the same as SUP. They don’t handle hard use.

i would not be using it. The crack only needs a tiny bit of a hole that allows water in to the core and you then have a worthless board. Plus I cannot stress enough how much this board is going to snap any minute if you are planing in chop.

Your weight is in the range of the board. Ok, not your weight that could be the cause. (Nb/ fast response ! 👍)
