I`ve got a flight next week from Perth International airport, does anyone know what they charge these days for excess baggage.

I`m looking at 15kg`s over my limit, and I ve heard that they charge anything from $10, - $80, a kilo.

I do`nt mind paying $10, but $80!!!, it would be cheaper to drive it home.

Thanks, Happy sailing.

Yep, domestic is $10 /kg. red roo is 23kg limit then pay after that and I think virgin allow an extra 5 kg for sporting equip, so effectivly 28 kg then $10/kg after that

From the International airport? To where, and with what carrier? Can't you find an excess baggage section on their website?

Totally carrier dependant. Qantas are typically pretty good domestic, no idea international. However on Virgin you'll get stung and Jetstar you might not even get it on the plane. I think last time I flew from Perth to Syd with virgin it cost me $250 or something extra. They charge $10/kg over 23kg. so if you check in 33kg it will cost you an extra $100. Couple of boards, sails etc you're looking at 40kg easy.

Edit see below, sorry for confusing the matter.

Sorry that's wrong, if you have sporting equipment and you're flying Virgin, as Brad said you get an extra 5kg allowance. So you pay for whatever over 28kg, I flew with them in January and was allowed 56kg because there was two of us together and more than two bags sporting. I'm flying with them again in Jan next year same deal

Yeah forgot about the 5kg extra allowance for sporting goods. For some reason I entirely missed brads post...I think it's because I had the reply window open when the lightning storm struck...just hit reply when the internet returned...now look stupid. Nothing new

OK I`m flying to London with cathay Pacific, and my baggage allowance is 20 Kg, I can`t find anything on their website.

You might have to learn to use a search engine and look around. It's not that hard

www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_JP.html

If it were me traveling I would ring them and ask them too. It is handy to print this stuff out as well so that if there is any argument you can show them their policy.

Do you have a phone? Thought about calling them? I assume you already told them you'll be bringing oversized luggage?

Anyway... in a nutshell, flying Cathy with a big windsurf kit bag in tow means you are pretty much f..cked... unless you have a good credit limit on your card and are prepared to give the card a good workout. Expect to pay US$25 per kg over the 20kgs...

Of course most people that do their homework before they book a flight realise that when you fly via the US, instead of Asia, you are entitled to bring 2 bags at 32 kgs each on most carriers... and last time I checked United Airline (Star Alliance) was happy for that second bag to be a surf/windsurf board.

My son & I travelled to the Pattaya Cup last week on Singapore Airlines with a Bic Techno 293.

Despite being 11kgs over between us, we took the board and a big, heavy rig for free.

We do a lot of travelling with this board (and his RSX) and domestically we travel with Virgin for free. Over 270cm long and Qantas will insist that you airfreight the board which can cost up to $200 depending on the length of the flight.
