Got up this morning. Looked at the weather and they changed the forecast from 15 odd kts to 18-23. So, with nothing else planned for the day, decided to hit Gnaraloo for the arvo and probably get the last decent sail for the season.
We turn up near the bay, catch up with a few mates and some guy pulls his boat up and comes over and tells everyone that he's just seen a massive crocodile around 800 mtrs up the coast.
We're obviously thinking this guys full of it and we're busting to get to Tombies and get some waves and obviously just dismiss this as a load of crap.
When I got back home tonight, I sat down and read the West Australian paper and on the inside cover, I see that this Crocodile was spotted just round the corner near coral bay only yesterday.
WTF.....Sharks I can live with, Crocodiles however just dont seem right.........No wonder we had the waves to ourselves all arvo.
Spooking tourists? I bet the wildlife officers weren't too happy about having to do that. Shouldn't tourists up in that part of the world be prepared to get outside their comfort zone?
That pic looks remarkably like the Spot-the-Kitesurfer compo that finished recently...and I thought they used photoshop! ![]()
no it does seem a little extreme, and I am no greeny.
Id have thought a satelite tag so that it could be tracked. Fisheries research and the unis etc use them all the time for white pointers and whalesharks etc.
Suprised there hasnt been a reaction in the media from the vegan type mung beans.
Imagine the outrage if a torurist got eaten and the 'authorities' knew about it.
I mean wild animals in remote Australia, whatever next.
Feel sad for the croc but for the sake of a lawsuit and bad publicity its probably better off dead.
All the authorities had to do was put up a warning sign. ( like they do in our lake ). The attraction of Coral Bay is the natural state of the water. If you start going out of your way to modify the water - well you might as well stay in Perth and swim in a chlorinated pool.
the croc stories spooked us out of the water - so we missed one session-
but had 3 epic days of sailing - almost wasnt going to take the wind gear up - but the sessions ended up being some of the best i have ever had up there - 20 knots and fun size (2 - 5 ft) with a low tide drain causing the waves to have some really nice 3d throw to them - just excellent for aerials !! the force is strong at gnaraloo
i hate to say it but there were a few kiters there but as usual none really surfing the wave (there are a few guys that do make it look good but they werent there) - and one guy (too much kite and could only ride toe one direction / heel the other - probably a recently converted surfer) put his lines around my rig (the third time that has happened this summer) ... but we were all there just to have fun so it was all smiles.
the day the croc was spotted we were snorkelling about 150m off gnaraloo bay in 12 ft of murky water... so we could have been within 500m if the sighting was valid. yikes!!
There are sharks galore up there,
it's a risk any time you go in the water.
I don't see that one crocodile makes a whole lot of difference...
...not that you'd go in if you knew it was there of course.
A warning sign should have been sufficient.
Tourism in Queensland and the Kimberley survives alongside crocs.
I am going to Coral Bay soon.
I would still go if they hadn't shot the croc.
Anyway, a shark takes someone and there is a whole lot of debate about whether to shoot it or not.
This poor creature just goes exploring and they kill it.
I am a vet. I have spent most of my life trying to save animal's lives.
That crocodile had as much right to life as anyone.
Executed without even commiting a crime.
Can't argue with any of your facts Pweedas, but with global warming we can expect more crocs to move south. Where are you going to draw the line in the sand that the crocs better not cross?
And why is the earth warming? Too many people, not enough crocodiles.
Poor old Steve Irwin, he would of loved to of caught that croc and made a TV show about it.
There would of been some bum surfie types, ferocious sharks, oversized rays, dangerous snakes, high surf and the croc - the yanks would of loved it.
I still cant get out how many people get taken in NT - "hey Im drunk, I need to get to the otherside of the river so I will swim across it". When I went to NT I was crapping myself all the time whenever I was near the water, especially with those crocs that launch out the water to get the dead chooks.
