Heres a few vids (there's also some pics in th SA section) from Saturdays session at Goolwa....I am still sore from my numerous catapults......heres me cracking 30.4 knots
Nice vids divaldo... thanks for sharing. Looks a tad choppy... but good speeds all the same. Curious what the wind strength was?
Wind was on all day, earlier it was 30-40 knots SW, backed off a little around lunchtime and became a tad gusty. All three vids show Myslef, Carl and Chris going across a junction where the goolwa channel is intersected by a small river / channel that comes out from the western side of the lake, making it quite choppy, but two very flat speed sections at either end of the runs, that were approx 2.5 kms long.
Just took my sail into replace the panel that I went through, best $90 bucks I have spent!
This prity much shows you where abouts from Google earth. Plenty have posted good images on the team challenge:http://www.gpsteamchallenge.com.au/showsession.php?date=2008-05-17&team=22
Hey Chris, Tim, et all,
where did you do your peaks? Before, in or after the channel wher ethe chop is coming from?
Cheers Geoff.
Hi Geoff, how are you mate?
The choppy part (in the vid) is the slowest part of the course. To the left of the camera view, is a 1km long strip that is as flat as glass up against the edge of the bank, then you sail through the choppy section, and it links up to another shorter bank that runs for another 300m or so. The good speed runs are on the longer bank section on a westerly, it gives a starboard tack that is an awesome run. By running the full length of both banks and across the choppy link, we can fit in a nautical mile.
All the photos and videos that have been posted from the weekend are great, but none of them really do it any justice. It's.....um..... awesome!
Cheers.
I think this sort of gives a better idea than the videos. You can see the bank which they sail along and the water is bloody flat next to it. Hard to believe that i sailed on the other side though. Has anyone tried this Chris?? Apparently my mate tells me (he walked accross it from the other side) that its about knee deep in there and dead flat. Anyone had a go???
Unfortunately Bubs it is just a mirage....
The sand is just wet from rainfalll and what is left after the wind blows the water north to the lake.
A word of warning though - if you sail close to the bank anywhere other than the bend near the choppy section you run the risk of hitting coral and ridges of silt that wash out when the sandbank drains, I personally dont sail closer than 10 metres in the middle of the run.
Hi Hoop,
No it wasn't Carl Newbold it was Carl Macdonald. It was near the barrages. Usually we run the starboard tack but it was too south westerly and broad so we were running port tack. Westerlies give flatter water and more consistent breezes - we will all be looking out for the honking westerlies.![]()
Gear used:-
Carl - Isonic 50, 5.8m koncept and 25cm sl7 fin.
Chris D - Exocet warp speed, 5.8m koncept and 23cm sym lockwood fin.

Chris R - Jp slalom 109, 6.6m koncept.
Sam D - Fanatic 91 and 5.1m loft.

Hey Chris,
I'm going well. But not much wind here so haven¡¯t been out for some time. Did you see Frant's last posted time - 13 k. That's desperate. The spot sounds great. I am going to be a bit of a free agent over the next couple of months. Only commitment is a few weeks in Hervey Bay to check out the whales. So when the westerlies become a bit more predictable Irecon I might be up for a trip over to check it out.
Cheers Geoff.

nice vid divaldo..that's exactly my first crack 30.4 and it's nice to see you run it and thinking how nice to see it from a spectator's perspective..looks more closer to 40 if from an untrained eye
i envy those smooth waters shucks mate![]()
Hey Geoff,
I've just got back from a SA roadtrip and had the pleasure of seeing but not sailing the alpha channel. Would be more than happy to join you on a road trip as well...
