My mate is the Aussie distributor for these helmet cameras called GoPro
They are a pretty sweet little camera comes in a waterproof housing and mounting hardware & everything ready to go.
Last week he gave me a sample of a new wide angle model that will be out here soon to try out. It's really cool with the wide angle you can see the board and sail and it gives you heaps more perspective of what your watching.
There was no waves and there is no exciting footage I was just cruising around to see how the footage came up.
The colours and clarity are so good on my computor and TV, I think youtube just compress it to a lower quality to keep size down, but you can see the angle it gives!
Oh yeah, and my Gybe? well I was just cruising, did a gybe and started cruising back the other way when BANG I was in the water!! I hooked a plastic bag or something on my fins!!! stopped me dead!!
Cant wait to get out in the waves this weekend and get some good footage with it
Sweet
Heaps better view then the other ones
How much, Where from?
Fit all Gath helmets or what?
Nice vids, keep them coming. Can't wait to get back on the water after seeing that
What spot this at? What gear you on/windstrength?
Vids like this are why I started and love this sport, the freedom of gliding along
Would like to one day tape my sailing and show mates from my perspective, that'll entice others into the sport
Yeah they come with a few different mounts for different applications..
They have a double sided tape section that you glue onto any helmet. its rock solid and I think you would struggle to pull it off but I ran a bit of fishing line from the camera tied to the helmet as a bit of a secutiry leash!!
They are called GoPro helmet camera and I think this wide angle model should be availble in a week or so www.lustyindustries.com/
Thats at Rickets Pt in Melb and I am on a 5.3Naish force and Fanatic 84ltr twin fin
hopefully get some swell and SE out in the waves this weekend at Sandy pt and get some decent footage!!
cheers
Thumbs up for not starting your post something like "hey, has anyone heard of these such-and-such cameras?"
How much are they?
Can someone remind me how to download the high(er) quality vid from youtube? There was a website or something.
... Dear Santa,
ka222 - awesome stuff, I think there's probably a market for teaching videos using this sort of POV filming - there's only so much you can learn from watching someone from the 'outside'.
Try out some of the other video hosting places like vimeo.com or exposureroom.com
You are right - youtube loses so much in the translation, and it would be nice to see just how good the footage really is.
OK, for high quality you add &fmt=18 for MP4, or &fmt=4 for Flash.
I also came across this one, which is pretty cool:
No Andrew that was jerksking on my old green one!
Ah not sure on the price of these ones, will find out!
That footage from Maui is good, nice to see some sun and wind! I like the wide angle view though becasue you can see arms, legs board and sail and it feels like you are sailing when your watching!
They make some sweet accessories like a suction cup to mount it on the nose of a surf board and some other cool things. I am planning on doing some cool angles like from the mast looking back, from the mast tip looking down etc...
I will use one of those high res video sites once I get some decent footage for sure..
this was just to see what the angle looked like etc..
Maybe try and get a double forward attempt or something decent on film!!!!
I have to say that the VIO POV 1 is pretty good. The quality is excellent, equivalent to DVD quality (720 x 480). I've played footage on my 46' LCD and it looks excellent. So if you want footage for playback on large TVS/wanting to make your own DVDs etc you're better off paying the extra. The VIO i snot cheap though $900, but it's a decent bit of kit. Very sturdy. I had a much lower resolution one before which as someone said is fine for youtube, emailing folk etc, but not really for big tv playback/editting etc
I am with Zed - the VIO POV1 is pretty much as good as it gets for high end work.
That said at $950 a throw it's not going to suit everyones budget
Kev
as I said... for high end work wait 9 to 12 months and you will POV footage challenging 35mm film quality. It won't be as cheap as the Go Pro cam though.
it's awesome that you guys are getting into this stuff. i enjoy watching home made sailing clips and enjoyed making my own dodgy ones a couple of years ago, and the more people doing it the better i reckon. probably not so good for people who do this professionally with everyone else now able to make their own fairly cheaply and easily, minus the helicopter and mega talented sailors maybe?![]()
i dont like the idea of a square camera on my helmet . sticks up too high and is easily knocked off.
I reckon the bullet type ones are better for helmets ![]()
I just uploaded a bit of footage to a better website its kept it in higher resoloution looks heaps better!
