similar to Canberra in winter. 8deg during the day, water in the lake only about 1 or 2 deg and sailing time of about 20 mins before you have to go and get warm in the car.

There is a reason why I only did that once.

What I wanna know then is how do you go about getting your windsurfing 'fix' during winter ??? especially seeing as I hate the cold.

Its bad enough now I cant get out as much as I would like.

Went sailing in the middle of winter in Canberra once. It was fine until I decided to try a trick of some description (worst idea ever) Fell in the water and had THE BIGGEST ice cream headache i've ever had in my life. If was incredible. Went straight to shore :P

Without trying to blow too much up Windwarriors coit, get one of their blast shields, or better than that their new wet suit made from same material. (order on line)
I know its just a fraction colder over there in winter but one of these under you wet suit, and a buoyancy vest (I have a NP high hook) keeps you reasonably warm. And for me to go in winter, I hate cold but cant go without some TOW
For a sooky larlar medical reason I have to keep torso warm (no cold water shock)and tested most items until I settled on using the windwarrior gear.

I went kiting (short slip to the dark side) once at south beach wearing a neoprene top and boardshorts.. I lasted about 5 minutes , but yep, no matter how short, some TOW does it for a mood boost !!!

I used to sail boats in Canberra's winter series. I still remember getting some late Laser training in, finishing on dusk and derigging under the headlights. Next day when I went down to race at 11 am, I had to break the ice off the boat. But that was still warmer than launching the Flying 15 (20' keel yacht) because you had to get into the water to get it on and off the trailer.

Those who have done it reckon that the Canberra winter series is colder than the Hobart one.

But compared to even the Poms we're all wimps. I've seen race reports about Optimist races where they couldn't race until the rescue boats ran around the lake crushing the ice. Then they went out into the snow and sailed - and these are kids 8-13 years old

I hate the cold but still race longboards through the Sydney winter; you tend to get either light wind days when the pumping keeps you toasty warm, or howling freezing days when you're too busy to feel the cold.

It does get cold in the bay out off Pt Henry in the middle of winter, say July and August it's at its coldest. But You just need a 4x3 or a 5x3 wetsuit and booties. Some days are not too bad, but the days where it is cloudy, cold and very windy, you pretty much dont warm up much at all, but as I said it is only really the middle of winter it sux.

as far as a fix mid winter in Canberra goes, we mainly went snowboarding a lot and traveled north to sail.

Dead of winter was too cold and I only tried that once, but before the end of May and after the end of August we started hitting the water again - with 5/3 semi dry suits, and neoprene pretty much from head to toe.

June was alway the worst month, cause the snow wasn't usually there and it was too cold for anything else.

When i was in Canberra in 99 and 2000, i was desperate for a sail so i went sailing on Lake Burleigh Griffinin the middle of winter. Was going great until It started to snow when in i was fully planning, got back to the edge of the lake, no feeling in my toes and trying to walk to the car through a lot of duck****. My fondest memeories of CANBERRA.

OceanBlue64, just sail every week, so you dont really notice it getting colder.
