Autumn and Winter can seem to last forever so this year I decided to keep track of days sailed so next year I can prepare myself mentally for the leaner periods. It would be great to get comments on whether this season was bad, average or exceptionally good for you compared to past seasons. Interstate comparisons would also make for interesting reading.

we were talking about this on Sunday, sailed every weekend pretty much since July1 this year (oh and 3 weeks in Maui :) )
SA has turned it on this year, lots of northery winds!
Pretty average over winter down here. The low systems that usually provide strong W to S/W seemed to be travelling through further north, giving those strong winds to southern WA, SA and Vic, while we mostly had the milder NW winds which have subsequently dumped record rainfalls over winter. (Wettest for over 50 years in Hobart).
Winter - bought formula gear so i could sail in any weather - managed to get down to the water most saturdays only to sail 7-8 times due to lack of wind - very frustrating. ![]()
Spent the working week looking at promising weather maps only for them to trend to red arrows by weeks end
But spring is here and el nino will deliver![]()
I can't believe people actually keep diaries of when they sail - that's way too organised.
Despite 6 weeks off with injuries and a holiday to yepoon - i have sailed at least twice a week since may and most of the time there been waves - what a cracker winter -just hope summer brings some howling southerlies and swell.
a few weekends without wind would be helpful so we can get some jobs done around the house - but then again I'm sure I'll find an excuse to go for a surf or SUP instead!!
Pretty crappy.I've been trying to get out as often as possible to keep some fitness but since May I think I've had half hr of 20kts WNW rest 8 - 12kts..
B highs have been blocking the westerlies and pushing them further south.![]()
Actually.. I think we did have about 2 good days of 20 - 25kts WNW that I missed..
I can count the number of sails I had from april to sept on one hand...and none of them were good. Winter in NSW has been THAT bad.
I buggered my back up at the end of January, had a operation on it in early July and had my first sail a couple of weeks ago. So no sailing for me but I didn't miss out on much anyway.
Summer is looking sweet.
Quick precis of 09/08 May to Sept from GPSTC data
09 33 sessions with 22 over 30knots peak speed( a good windy session for me) / 08 25 sessions with 10 over 30.
09 wins even allowing for improvement and better kit!![]()
That's our windy season (FNQ) except this year has been the worst I can remember by far
So sad for us because summer is our off season so nothing to look forward to
except a trip to WA ![]()
in jericoacoaracoaa ive been on 4.2 every day for the last 3 weeks... but i had to stay in england for 3 weeks in august where i only sailed once on a 5.3.. it was tough!!
This winter was terrible in Sydney.
Winter 2008 - 7 sessions (all on slalom, no formula gear)
Winter 2009 - 6 sessions (all on formula gear)
Last year I didn't have Formula gear and managed 7 sessions on the slalom gear in comparison. This year, not 1 session on slalom gear.
Kept track since Easter and have only missed out one weekend. Plenty of northerlies. I am new to the sport so gotta admit that some of thoses days were only around 12 knots but most were well above 20. Isn't this the way it always goes or have I been spoilt too soon???? Looking forward to my first summer but look like missing next 4 weeks or so with first sailing injury. (Karma?)
The winter northerlies have been exceptionally consistent with every weekend having one or both days ridable.
Normally in winter we have to ride stormy westerlies but this year it's been mostly northerlies. A bit gusty but mostly sunny and strong. Last Friday-Saturday we had 40-50 knots and sunshine then 25 knot WSW on Sunday.
Grr don't want to know about it..![]()
