The final stretch of the new Indian Ocean drive will be officially opened this weekend. :)

The new road between Lancelin and Cervantes means there will be an uninterrupted sealed coastal route from Perth to Dongara and coastal communities further north.

The Transport Minister says the state-funded $95-million project has been delivered under budget and nine months ahead of schedule.

It's the first major project to be built under Main Roads direct management in the last 10 years.

The new coastal route will allow tourists and other light vehicles to avoid the heavy freight traffic on the Brand Highway.

Stick up a sign going along the lines of....

"Big sharks kill.
Great Whites, Tigers and Bronze Whaler sharks
are live and hunt in waters in this area."

With a skull and crossbones in the background.

What a pleasant drive it will be. Meanwhile on the east coast you rarely see the ocean on the Pacific or Princes Highway.

Yeah for the same reason I left out Lancelin Pizza!

Hey forgot one thing too - most of those places are a liquor store too... so all you need in one stop shop - petrol, tucker and a brewski after a sail

Drove through to Wedge & Cervantes last weekend on the new road.

It was great, super smooth and quick. (I figured as it wasn't officially open there wouldn't be any radar ).

There is still gravel and road works from Pinnacles to Cervantes.

It will certainly change Wedge which is a real bummer, it has change heaps in the last 30 years I have been going up but this will really be the end of an era.

The road from Lancelin to Perth is going to be hell in summer with the extra traffic, but at least they are working on a heap of overtaking sections, at some spots it looks just about wide enough for two lanes both ways.

PC no buildings at all on the new road, Cervantes would be the best place to fuel up.

Greenroom at times you still need a 4WD to get beach access north of Wedge and definatly need one most of the time to go south of the island. Spewing about the fourby never

Most of the towns are not ON the IOD you have to leave the Highway to get fuel or food, although Lano is only 7kms in, Cervantes is only 4kms off the IOD, after you leave Perth the first town that is actually on the IOD is Jurien Bay, to my knowledge the only one with liquor on the IOD is Leeman, they also have the cheapest fuel, (131.0) the most expensive is Jurien @ 146.6 for ULP and 146.0 for Diesel (today) thats 16.6cpl (ULP) more than Cataby (today)although there was talk of someone building one somewhere between Lano and Wedge.

Greenhead is always cheaper for fuel than Leeman because they are off the main road - but it is only about 5km total out of the way for about 6 or 8c per litre cheaper
Greenhead's premium price is same as Leemans normal ULP price

Agreed about Jurien - it has always been the most expensive between dongara and perth

Yep but most people don't go hunting for fuel, its fuel up, eat up and the other :-) so you need to be ON the IOD. The Leeman fuel stop even came out and washed my windscreen and pumped my fuel hey when was the last time you saw that! Cervantes was 148.0 for d and 145 for Ulp that is no reason to call in! (apart for the good food I will give them that)
