Has anyone been windsurfing on lake Connewarre near Geelong lately? What's it like?? Also, what's the Barwon River like in Ocean Grove?

Closed apparently.

Blue-green algae bloom...

Check out the Victoria Forum.

I've never sailed it, but it doesn;t look very inviting. I reckon Pt Henry would be a much better bet in most wind directions, but then I've never sailed there either...

Slowdog..

Connewarre - Had massive weed blooms on the lake that have now blown onto shore creating a rotting, stinking mess. Southerlies being onshore or ok cause once you get out the smell disappears (upwind of it) - not a good idea to let the missus and kids just sit in the car during a session!! One of our local sailors has a property on the lake and contacted parksvic about the rotting weed and the results was the warning signs? Upstream had people water skiing on it so would be interested to know if the water is ok or not...

Barwon - Ocean Grove - The river mouth is good fun but gusty and very tide dependant. This is where I learnt to sail 20 years ago!! A bit better closer to the bridge but watch out for the sandbars in lower tides also the tides really move through here and many a beginner has had the problem being swept out with the tide only to become tangled in the bridge ( ok just once!) Better in higher tides and even safer in an incoming tide. Also keep an eye out for the resident dolphin (friendly to windsurfers)

Point Henry - always a safe bet in any wind direction

Thanks guys, I'm actually from Melbourne but was looking for somewhere else to explore in vic and go fast. Went to Inverloch on the weekend and it was awesome in the inlet when the cool sw change came thorugh.

Any other suggestions in Vic for flat water?

Slowdog,

Point Henry is worth a trip down the road. Good open flat water that is sailable from just about any direction. Always people out, from World class speedsters to beginners and everthying in between. Is Shallow for beginners (waist deep) and has some weed beds which keep the water fairly flat (Some good speeds have been done there).,,

Cheers

Barwon River Estuary, great fun but the higher the tide the better. (My avatar was taken there)

There is a great 1 metre deep section about the size of a footy pitch opposite the caravan park - on high tide (across the channel)

In a southerly some good wind can be had near the bridge with some smooth 15-17 knotters.

Lake Connewarra smells like poo!!

Are there still heaps of rubber piercing urchins there? A good incentive to learn to gybe!

Nope - the sea urchin population has been eradicated by the beginner kiters who mop them up with their bums!
