For those who don't read the GPS thread - it's on this Saturday and the forecast is good so don't miss the biggest day of the year in Australian windsurfing!
Details and entry forms;http://www.windsurfingwa.org.au/index.php?view=details&did=6%3Alancelin-ocean-classic&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=64
Or you can enter on the day.
Legendary party at the pub afterwards!
is there a Bus or something going from Lancelin to Ledge? I dont have anyone to drop me there, or drive my car back to Lancelin...
In the past AFAIK there has been no organised bus or anything. I normally am staying in Lancelin at the time and the rest of the family can bring my car back but this year the xmas holidays were cut short so I will be driving up for the day (if the forecast doesnt change too much).
I am sure anyone at the finish will be happy to give you a lift, in fact if you ask around at the start you could probably organise one then. If you can wait until I finish I will behappy to give you a lift (but it might be a long wait)
!
Life Jackets are required for the marathon. Should be type 1 or 2 - your jacket will be checked at the sign in desk. There will be life jackets available to borrow at the rego caravan at Ledge Point - deposit and small fee required i think, unsure how many available. Smoke flares also available.http://www.oceanclassic.org/
You can normally find people at the start that are willing to drive your car to the finish for you. Just check how many beers they have had before you hand over the keys! If not then there are always people at the finish heading back that you can catch a lift with. That is the beauty of having so many vans and station wagons around.
I'll probably have 5 or 6 mates up there who are watching but not sailing so there'll be a few drivers around. Just look for my sail number and come ask me.
Hey,
Just wondering what the difference in level is between elite and open in the wave comp. Im not sure what division to enter, how full on and how many competitors does elite usually get? What sort of level are the top guys in the open division at?
Cheers
How about inviting kitesurfers to help break the Guiness world record for "the most number of competitiors in an open water Marathon"?
What is the existing record?
I'd love to see windsurfers and kitesurfers racing together at the same time on the same course in a friendly sharing of the wind and water we all love so much.
Please note the sign only relates to the grassy area bounded by the fence it is attached to.
Kitesurfers are free to kite from any location at Lancelin outside that area.

Jurien Bay to Mandurah:
Wednesday until midnight: S/SW winds 15/20 knots. Seas 1.0m to 1.5m. Swell 1.0m to 1.5m.
Thursday: S/SW winds 13/18 knots increasing to 20/25 knots during the afternoon and evening. Seas 1.5m to 2.0m. Swell 1.5m to 2.0m.
Friday: SE winds 13/18 knots shifting S/SW in the afternoon and increasing to 20/25 knots by the evening. Seas 1.5m to 2.0m. Swell to 1.5m.
Saturday: S/SE winds 13/18 knots shifting S/SW in the afternoon and increasing to 20/25 knots
Regarding the kiters competing, I have nothing against them but no body could seriously expect to have kiters mixed in amongst 200 odd windsurfers leaving the beach at the same time - that is seriously dangerous. I recall kiters were in it a few years ago and there was a separate, earlier start which was utter carnage; guys getting dragged over the groin etc. I'm sure the standard of kiting has improved greatly since then but they don't seem suited to a big fleet start like we have in Lano.
Don't forget Chris, the pizza for dinner from Nola's pizza shop-how good are they. Nola ran the windsurfing race for so many year's now it's a race to her shop for pizza!
I am really bummed out, sitting in Melbourne flying back late Friday or early Saturday.
My chances of getting a leave pass to do the classic are zero after being away for a week
.
I do love my family really.
And worst of all SP has been doing nought, I couldn't have even borrowed gear and gone for a burn
thats it if I had been given time off from lecturing. Ahh...... S..t
In 20 knots plus the cool thing is that there will probably be 50+ people doing the race on wave gear, which makes the fleet even bigger.
Let's face it, if you are racing on wave gear, it's pretty satisfying to beat sailors who are on race stuff -and this will definitely happen!
Good Point!
I am one of those with wave gear that are going in the race for the first time this year, mainly due to the wind forecast. Will be having a sail with the life vest on this arvo to see how that goes.
How long should the race take for a intermediate sailor on wave gear.
Also should I go for my bigger 6m sail and try to push it or stay with my comfy easy to use Tush Rock 5.5m??????
Any advice is much appreciated
Also hope they have not invited back Mental As Anything to provide the entertainment as they really sucked last year!
The forecast hasn't changed all week and still looking positive for around 18-20 at race time.
The course is mostly pretty deep off the wind so your biggest wave sail is generally the go. The first leg is the squarest so if you are comffortable on that leg, the rest should be pretty easy.
The weed is not too bad at all at the mo, it's a toss-up whether to use a weed fin, but a wave fin will be totally fine.
The waves went off yesterday in plenty of breeze.
Interesting to hear the waves had plenty of wind - wasn't what spot1 said ! Bobbing about was his description, but maybe he left Lancelin too early.
Anyway - thought you all might be interested in this
Wont be running ,but what time does the race start ,im guessing 1.30ish seems brief at 1.00 will pop up and whatch the carnage ..good luck to all competing...c u at the pub...
