Now that I've taken up my winter residence, I'm once again becoming aware of the weight difference in rigs. I have heavy equipment here. The Chinook Comp boom and a 30% carbon mast. If I purchase new and more expensive replacements, the rig will be lightened by a pound or two. Up to now this hasn't been a noticeable difference for me once I am sailing. However, since I've been having trouble with shoulder tendonitis, I'm wondering if a lighter rig might be less stressful. However, I do think that the power of the wind still creates the biggest force creating the stress. What do you think?
There's certainly advantages in light gear, but unless you're uphauling, I think the shoulder stress is more affected by rig efficiency and stability.
If the centre of effort is constantly shifting around in gusts, that's a real strain on the whole arm.
Some sails are more stable than others.
Tuning can also affect how "heavy" a sail feels, not enough downhaul, is usually the problem.
Woops, had a gut feeling about you Ruby, but maybe you're starting to reform since your Brucie days, after all you've made 27 posts without getting barred so far, be interesting to see how long you can make it, as this persona.
Amazing that somebody can windsurf for 20 years and still have questions about a lighter mast or boom.
I am currently using a selection of 09/10 severne sails...gotta be the lightest sails ever....combined with a good mast etc this set up weighs bugger all...this HAS to be reflected in the way you sail and has to be easier on the body(compared with old style rigs that weigh a ton and are pretty hard going when submerged and trying to water start etc..)...demo some new gear and see the difference...![]()
I've got shoulder tendonitis .I find the disadvantages of heavy gear is in the waterstarting in light winds etc but I must admit I avoid anything over a 5.6m sail as I find that my body finds it heavy work & it can stir things up.I rely on the harness a lot so the only time my arms get a workout is gybing ,jumping , waterstarting..Ive got some great streches that my chiro gave me & they are a god send. I do them every 2 hrs even during the night if necessary after a sail.If your tendonitis is like mine as soon as you get tight between the shoulder blade its downhill so get some streches to strech up the back & theyll help. Can't really describe mine here as they are a bit complex.. bit of a contortion but boy they do the job!
I just read the other posts..Oh well if I got sucked in to answering bad luck..![]()
think about it .. thiers no reason in the word y a hevy rig would be betta than i light one ... .. ligher rig would feel more responsive lighter in your hand ... just evevy part of that rig would be better the lighter it is ... i often get lower back pain if i dont have my seat harness up high and loose .. if i tighten the leg straps and hold the spreader bar below my belly button i often mind my self in trouble ... visit a chiropractor 2

Wow all of those ah???
I've seen some of them on here, but not all those, he seems to frequent lots of places.
Obviously Brucie's career has been carefully monitored, over the years.
Elmo, how do you draw such a list ??? You keeping his domain or something ?
Just curious, me not computer-savvy...
(and with that list, he gonna run out of names at some point...)
Well, now that we have the usual useless posts, the attempts at slander with stolen photographs, and other non-sense, is there anyone that can add something intelligent?
