Love it! Far out, man! You think this is the Next Step for windsurfing?
I bet the mast wouldn't be the only thing that was lighter, though -- your wallet would definitely lose weight in direct proportion...
...I look forward to picking one up on the secondhand market in about 20 years, when I'll finally be able to afford it ![]()
maybe the advantages are offset by the extra reinforcement needed in the luff pocket to stop it wearing out
Diminishing returns.
I agree that controlling flex would be a challenge with an intrinsically stiff design like that.
duno if i trust a mast like that but y not on a boom ?around the head . easie enough to make it ajustable as well .. have the last 100mm of either side solid tube and make the insdie of the weave smooth so the extention piece will slide up the inside .. for grip just mabey have a tube fit over the weave so the grip doesnt get pushed thru?
The trouble with putting shims on the mast for the cam is that the cams are in different positions for each sail. By the time you've reinforced the mast clamp area, you'd have half the mast covered with an extra layer.
Also, it's gonna have no impact resistance.
Each one of those little fibres will break or crumple on impact, and then the whole shebang will collapse.
We are the impact kings !!
one or two piece mast or will you be able to buy it in a 50m roll and just use what you need when you need it
valid point with the impact resistance, how bout wrapping it with carbon so its solid ![]()
haha would be interesting to see what windsurfing is like in 20 years...
Honeycombed interiors for racing boards (resined paper some said) was supposed to be lighter and stronger than the older denser foams, until the board started taking on water.
Is it still used nowadays, or was it another bright idea that just didn't work?
Unintentionally morbid but interesting nontheless, check out the strength of trusses/lattices once they fail...
You're probably right. Trusses are rigid. Masts are bendy.
The tubular truss is a novel concept though, to me.
theres an interesting story behind that crane collapse if you look it up.
the 1st crane crew said it was too windy, so the builder got another crew to do it. you can see the flag in the top right corner.
i think the top end slalom crew might get a kick outa that potential mast, but as for me i think i might stick to something that takes a bit of a beating. potential future influence i think.
