Hi Folks!

I'm flying out soon with Virgin Airlines with a single check-in bag containing my kite gear + personal effects. I don't think I can make it to or under the 23kg max allowance.

I have read on other forum posts that Virgin used to allow up to 28kg for sporting goods free of charge (additional 5kg for free) and that this policy has now been revoked and you now have to pay for any excess baggage when over 23kg.

Has anyone been recently flying with kite gear on Virgin with a total weight between 23 and 28kg and got away with no extra fees?

thanks for sharing!

Chris

Done that already, the lady didn't know about any of this...so it seems I had to pay for any excess...just trying to see if anyone has had any experience with that recently.

was meant to be flying out today with my windsurfing stuff on virgin but flights are cancelled out of melbourne because of the volcanic ash...

also noticed that they have bumped up the excess kg fee to $15 per kg. used to be $10 per kg.

I flew with Virgin Cairns-Melbourne in May this year, the 5kg sports goods offer is no longer available and they are very anal about how much gear you check in. I end up being about 2-3kg over weight and had to put some gear into carry on. Although when I took the bag from check-in to oversized baggage I put everything back. Your best bet is to probably buy an additional carry on if your going to be over weight.

its really all about your luck, i flew with 29kg checked to townsville and back with then and that was fine because the check in person said i had sporting allowance of 5kg. this was 2 months ago. i have also had people say 23 kg and stick to it so just go to the person who looks the nicest and pack your handluggage well

just something I heard directly from a virgin blue air hostess, wether you get charged for excess baggage and how lenient they are (like 2-3kg over or not) can depend on the virgin terminal. Apparently the ones that are run as a franchise are more anal and likely to charge you excess, where as the others aren't run as strictly and are less caring.

This happened to me flying out of Hobart in feb this year, needed to drop a couple kg before I could get through with no charge, but flying with the same gear back + extra bought gear they didn't even look at the weight twice.
